Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Thornton-Anchorage-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. There are two high schools in Thornton: Thornton High School and Arapaho Valley High School. The first people to live in Thornton were the Puebloans who built their homes on hills overlooking the river. In 1868, John Wesley Powell passed through this area on his way to explore the Rocky Mountains and named it after his friend and mentor, Samuel Colt. The first store opened in 1865 by J .D. Bickerton and ran until 1870 when it closed because of lack of business. In 1907, ownership of what is now Thornton clearcut land for farming which led to its growth as a agricultural center during prohibition period. The post office was established at Thornton in 1907 and remained open until 1951. By 1910 there were over 100 businesses with a total population of 2,500 residents. In 1924, an oil well was drilled near Pattonville by Harry Houdini which lead to the start of oil production at nearby Anschutz Well No 4.1945
