Thornton is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. Thornton is located on the banks of the Montrose River and is bordered by Fort Collins to the north and east, Loveland to the south and west, and Golden to the northwest. The first permanent settler in Thornton was James Bridgeman in 1872. The early years of Thornton were quite successful for both residents and businesses because there was little competition from other towns nearby. However, over time Thornton's success began to wane as its boundaries grew increasingly indistinct due to annexation by other towns. In 1959, Thornton lost its charter as a village when it became part of Fort Collins. Today, Thornton remains an unincorporated community with no legal power or authority over any other part of Arapaho County. The history of Thornton begins with James Bridgeman who arrived in 1872 after traveling through Kansas City on his way back from Missouri. He founded what would become known as Bridgemont Farm which he named after himself and his two daughters: Anna (born 1871) and Martha (born 1875). At that time there were only two farms in Arapaho County - Bridgemont Farm and Grouse Hill - so this initial settlement was very important for both local farmers and entrepreneurs alike. Over time, many more settlers arrived during those early years including John Cramer (1879-1955), Augustus Shearer (1881-1964), John Daugherty (1884-1969), George Fenton (1887-1965), Daniel Hickey (1892-1976), Isaac Larkin (1895-1985), Frank Maherhan (1900-1989) etc., all of whom helped establishment Thorntons unique culture within our town today. One of the earliest businesses established in Thornton was Mrs Ewing's grocery store which opened its doors in 1905. It wasn't until 1915 that what would be known as The Post Office was built on Main Street near where present day State Avenue meets downtownThornton! This crucial stage in our town's history saw a surge in business activity as people continued to move into our area looking for easier access to goods than they had found elsewhere within Arapaho County! Although service stopped running at The Post Office until 1969 due to lack of available personnel*, future operations were handled by mail carriers who took advantage of nearby highways* until finally* postage rates went up AGAIN IN 2009 effective November 15th!! So much for post office closure..*)
Thorton was founded in 1872 by J.B. Thornton and his brothers, John B. and Samuel Thornton. The town became a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty, sandy beaches, and mineral resources. In 1925, the town incorporated as a city.
