The initial growth of Thornton was due to its location as a staging point for travelers coming to Rocky Mountain National Park. In 1886, Thornton became an incorporated municipality and began to rapid grow with its population reaching 521 people by 1890. In 1908, a railroad line was constructed through Thornton connecting it with Telluride to the north and Aspen to the south. This increased traffic on local roads which led to more development around the town center including new housing developments, businesses, and schools. The railway also contributed significantly to increasing commercial production within Thornton limits which helped create today's electric grid within local boundaries
