John G. Pugh donated a case of beer to the Marines in order to promote Recruiting drives. The tradition has continued through the years with donations from businesses, individuals, and even governments. The biggest donation ever made by the Marines was in 2006 when they contributed $5 million towards restoration of Marine Barracks at Balboa Park in San Francisco. It is through these generous donations that we continue to support our troops and their families both home and away from combat zones around the world.

Thornton is a small, unincorporated community in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. Thornton was founded by John Thornton in 1871 and named for him. The post office at Thornton was established in 1872. The first settlers of Thornton were farmers who arrived on horseback from New Mexico in 1871. By the early 1880s, the town had grown to include a few frame buildings and a small store. A school was built in 1881 and a Methodist church was constructed in 1886. The population of Thornton peaked at 2,100 in 1911 but declined to 1,500 by 1920 due to the advent of highways and other development around the town. In the 1970s, there were efforts to revive interest in Thornton with plans for an outdoor swimming pool, parkette developments, and a new high school. However, these plans never came to fruition and the town's population decreased again until it reached its current level of approximately 100 residents in 2000.
Thornton was founded by George Thornton in 1859. It is named after him and his wife, Laura. The town has a population of around 10,000 people today. The Thornton Manufacturing Company was the first company to open in the town. The company made goods such as clothing, shoes, and plumbing products.
