Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 538 at the 2010 census. Thornton was named for Samuel Thornton, an early settler and prospector. The first post office in Thornton opened on December 1, 1879. It was located east of the current town center and served a area that included most of what is now south-central Weld County. The first store in town was built by Nelson & Hargrave on Main Street. A hotel/motel called the Green Hills Hotel and Restaurant was built in downtown Thornton in 1951. The motel closed its doors in 2009, but still stands as a historical landmark within the community today. In 1902, George Fenton began operating an agricultural supply business in Thornton that would become one of the largest grocery stores west of the Rockies. In 1909, he opened another grocery store called "Fenton's Fine Store", which remains open to this day as one of the most traditional general stores in southwestern Colorado Springs history. From 1912 until his death in 1959, Jock Mahoney operated a bakery and cafe across from his home on First Avenue called "The Cafe". That building still stands today and has been used as a wedding chapel since 2006
