Thornton, Colorado is a small town located in the western corner of Weld County. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Thornton has been called "the moral capital of Colorado" for its moral values and community spirit. Thornton's history dates back to 1876 when it was founded as a trading post by John W. Thornton and his brothers-in-law, George Aiken and Jonathan Adair. The post remained active until 1926 when it was closed due to the Great Depression. In 1957, Thornton became an incorporated town with a population of 712. In 2006, the city of Thornton merged with the neighboring village of Denver to form one municipality with a total population of 6,314. The commercial center of Thornton is located near South Broadway and North First Street on the east side of town. These streets are home to many small businesses that provide jobs for local residents and contribute to the local economy.
