Thornton is a small town in southern Colorado. The population was 1,253 at the 2010 census. Thornton has been called "the little engine that could" because of its progressivism and business district. Thornton is known for its famous Thornton Ace Hardware store, founded in 1892 by George Thornton. In addition to his hardware store, George also ran a bakery and restaurant in the town. The restaurant was later closed but the bakery continued to operate until it closed in 2006. The history of Thornton dates back to 1892 when George Thornton started trading goods from his home on Ute Creek. He opened up what is now the George A. Thornton Hardware Store in downtown Thornton withhelp from his father-in-law, John Hutton Sr., who operated a grocery next door at 184 Main Street. The first residents of Thornton were farmers and their families who worked around Ute Creek until 1902 when there were several shops opened up along US 36 including one owned by Harry Hungerford which served as an early post office before it was moved to Longmont in 1904. By 1916, there were 14 businesses open down Mattis Boulevard alone with 780 people employed! In 1952, The Gazette reported that "the old mill [on] Ute Creek [has been] gone for years" and according to current lore it may have burned down due to overuse or sabotage by local children during prohibition days! However, even without the mill there would be enough commerce coming into town thanks to railroad tracks running through town which connected both north and south side of town making everything possible! In 1966 when Highway 24 came through town new businesses popped up like Ford's Service Station (laterhomeof KFC), Burger King (!), Pizza Hut (opened 1976), Weld Auto Parts (opened 1984) among others! Today we can still see some evidence of those pioneer days like the remains of an early post office building which once housed a grocery as well as two residences built near each other around 1900! With so much going on today we can't help but reflect on all that happened here during those early years when things really mattered!!

Thornton, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greeley-Aurora metropolitan area. Thornton has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 4,000 years and was founded in 1859 by General George Armstrong Custer as a wagon stop on the Larimer Trail. In 1875 Thornton became one of the first towns to be organized in what would become Colorado. After serving as its seat from 1861 until 1870 it became an agricultural center with a large dairymaid colony led by Miss Sarah Atherton. The area now known as Thornton was first settled by Norwegian immigrants who arrived here during the early 1800s and named their community after their homeland (Nordre Torna). They built a log church which still stands today and began farming land that they purchased from Indian tribes such as the Kiowa and Comanche. Over time, other settlers came to Thornton including Englishmen, Germans, Mexicans and Chinese men who followed railroad construction through this region during the late 1800s and early 1900s. By 1920 there were over 100 businesses in Thornton with a population of 1,500 people including many banks and grocery stores. However, World War II caused significant economic decline for Thornton with nearly all of its businesses closed or reducing their hours due to wartime shortages of materials such as food storage tanks and munitions production facilities. Despite this difficult period, Thornton persevered through hard times becoming an entrepreneurial success story later on when localmanufacturers like Hewlett-Packard began investing in local businesses throughout Weld County Today Thornton features several popular tourist destinations such as its downtown core filled with colorful art galleries; State Historic Park where you can explore frontier buildings dating back to 1859; plus numerous small schools which have been integral in developing new generations of entrepreneurs: Holy Cross Catholic School (founded in 1924), Horseshoe Casino (opened in 1907) & North Star Brewing Company (founded in 1974).
