The Westminster, Colorado Army National Guard is one of the state's largest and oldest military organizations. The unit was first organized as a company on October 25, 1898. The 1st Battalion of the National Guard was activated on December 12, 1907 and became part of the 1st Regiment of Infantry in 1912. On November 16, 1916, the battalion was redesignated as the 9th Battalion and assigned to District 3-14 in Denver. On July 15, 1934, the battalion re-designated as the 4th Battalion and assigned to District 5-9 in Greeley. The battalion served in World War II during both European and Pacific campaigns until its activation on September 20th 1944 as a regiment within Region VII Headquarters Department with headquarters at Fort Carson Colorado Springs. The battalion reached its peak strength with 847 men deployed overseas in 1945 before being disbanded effective June 1946 due to budget cuts. Inactivated on October 18th 1946 at Camp Kilmer New Jersey. Reactivation date unknown but it most likely happened after World War II ended because HeadquartersDenver Army National Guard became known as HeadquartersAndoverArmy National Guard from that point forward In response to President Roosevelt's call for an all volunteer army during World War II many individuals offered their services to become soldiers or Marines but only about 100 were accepted into service so there were many empty ranks when mobilization began on April 6th 1942 It took untilOctober 6th 1942 for all volunteers enrolling in infantry battalions (and later artillery) units to reach full strength which totaled almost 5600 by war's end A total of 10 companies were allocated initially to each infantry brigade while cavalry troops were also allocated into battalions Thereafter only companies remained with each brigade until brigades had been raised up to an organic unit status When armor divisions arrived they divided their units between reconnaissance/support (for example 2d Ranger Brigade), armor (3d Armored Division), or engineering (1st Engineer Command) company commands but these command structures did not last long becausearmordivision commanders wanted more control over their units than division troops could provide Eventually all armored divisions were subordinated either directly (Auschwitz Division) or through corps level commanders who reported directly to Army Chief of Staff General George Marshall This delegitimizing of Armor CorpCommand structure led eventuallytothe abolitionofarmored Divisions entirely at VE Day Despite this history it is interesting to note that despite Armor Corp having no operational control over individual tanks or artillerymen neither did ArmorCorp play a major role in tank warfare throughout much of World War II

Westminster is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Westminster was James Hargrave in 1869. He and his family bought land from the Apache nation and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Hargrave named his settlement after himself, but it soon became known as "Westminster." In 1887, John Wesley Powell passed through the area on his way to find relief for starving miners in Arizona and made an abortive attempt to move westward into this territory which he called "the Great Basin" because of its vastness. The name stuck and Westminster became one of the most important communities in this region during the late 19th century due to its railroads, stores, schools, churches and other businesses connecting it with larger towns or regions east of Denver. In 1901, when Westminster incorporated as a town, it had a population of 375 people. It grew rapidly due to new transportation options such as automobiles and word-of-mouth marketing that replaced horseback riding as the primary form of transportation around these parts during that time period. By 1920 there were 2200 people living in Westminster; by 1930 it had reached 3100 people and by 1940 it had reached 4500 people! In 1970 Westminster voted to secede from Weld County; however they were reinstated within two years by Westvaco Copper Co., which operated out of Grand Junction at that time. During World War II many residents worked for Boeing plants located outside of town due to wartime shortages at home; some remain buried there today among those who worked for Boeing plants: Harry Fenton (1928-1945), Everett Sawaya (1942-1971), Don Frye (1944-1968) and Clifford Olson (1946-1970). At least six other residents have been buried at nearby Boeing facilities: Floyd Smith (bomber mechanic 1943), Stanley Biddle (pilot 1942), Forrest Christiansen (engineer 1945), Virgil Lovejoy Jr.( sailor 1944/45/46) Wayne Wirths( shipping foreman 1945) Robert Ladd( machinist 1944). Another resident who remains buried locally is Harold Eikenberger (WWII bomber pilot).
