Westminster is a town in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. Westminster is part of the Metropolitan Denver Area. It is known for its "Granite City" architecture and two parks: Westminster Park and Great Western Park. The townsite was laid out on December 3, 1892 by George Washington Downing and consists of a small area west of Interstate 25 between I-25 and Main Street. In 1907, the town became a city with a population of 2,500 people. On May 14, 1912, Westminster merged with neighboring Aurora to form one municipality with an estimated population of 10,000 people. The merger happened because both towns were experiencing rapid growth due to new job opportunities in the aerospace manufacturing industry during the early 21st century. The Granite City architecture is famous for its high-quality granite used in many public buildings including the Colorado State Capitol building (1901), Denver Art Museum (1920), municipal courthouse (1927), and now the University of Colorado Boulder Campus Library (1994). Many private residences also featuregranites as well such as The Palace Hotel & Garden Apartments in downtown Aurora which was built in 1911 by millionaire Harry Kellar after he acquired land adjacent to Westminster's park that would eventually become Great Western Park (). Despite being a small town at its inception, Westminster quickly started becoming known as a center for education and culture. In addition to having one of the best schools in Colorado at that time (the Westminster School District was founded in 1907), it also played host to many activities such as plays and balls given by prominent figures in society. It wasn’t until after World War II that Westminster truly began to decline; however, it has since begun to rebound somewhat thanks to its active community spirit and growth potential.
