In Westminster, Colorado, coffee is a centuries-old tradition. Westminster is a city in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 15,471 at the 2010 census. Westminster is the county seat of Adams County. The name Westminster comes from "Westering Place" which was an early settler's name for what is now downtown Westminster. The first people to live in what is now Westminster were the Anasazi and Pueblo cultures. In 1872, when Denver andAdams Counties were merged into Adams County, the City of Westminster was established as a part of that merger. It had a population of just over 100 people in 1880 but grew rapidly with growing industry and tourism brought about by railroads running through the area. By 1910, it had reached its peak population with 2,500 residents and boasted a variety of businesses including banks, breweries, restaurants and theaters. However, due to railroad construction through town and other factors such as World War I; growth slowed throughout the 1920s until it started to slowly increase again during the 1930s before reaching its current level around 1950-1960%. The West Side Expressway (I-25) added significant traffic congestion to downtown during his time as mayor because he wanted to build more office buildings on top of existing warehouses on Sherman Avenue east of Downing Street where many small business owners located their businesses at that time because access to I-25 was only via Sherman Ave., making it difficult for them to grow their businesses without also having their traffic impact increased significantly on neighboring businesses which were then forced out onto Downing Street or Sherman Ave.. Through Mayor Higgins' efforts we saw some major changes made in Downtown Westminster including: 1) installation of streetlights throughout Downtown starting in late 1969 2, 2) opening up much needed retail space on Market Street between 6th & 7th Streets beginning in 1978 3, 3) installation of a new water main system beneath Main Street beginning in 1984 4. These changes not only improved pedestrian flow but also helped make Downtown one continuous destination center providing easy access by automobile for all typesof shoppers becoming increasingly important not just within our city but also beyond our borders as retailers began moving into suburban areas across Weld County looking for easier access to customers statewide while still offering quality product at competitive prices.
