Westminster is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. It lies at the junction of U.S. Routes 6 and 7, about 15 miles southwest of Greeley. As of the 2010 census, Westminster had a population of 577.[1] The first permanent European settlement in what is now Westminster was made by Kit Carson and his party on July 24, 1872 when they traveled from Fort Collins to survey the area for a rancho that would be given to him by Brigham Young as part of the Utah Territory purchase. The town was platted on October 12, 1872,[2] and named after Westminster Abbey in England;[3][4] but it failed to gain much success as a farming community until after World War I when it became a popular summer vacation spot for Americans because of its proximity to Yosemite National Park. In 1924, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, then president of Pakistan, addressed a crowd in Westminster Center which has been held annually since then as one of the most significant events in the center's history. A new building was erected adjacent to Main Street near where IMAX Theater is located (now used as parking lot) in 2002 which served as both the town hall and administrative headquarters during this time. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 2006 but replaced with a new core within two years including businesses located on 425 Main Street across from City Hall (an old post office). In 2009-2010 there was significant growth with development along Airport Road just south of Main Street which led directly into City Hall annexe destined for mixed use apartments/retail space/office buildings such as One Sixty One Development LLC., GTC Data Solutions LLP., etc.; however this road closure ended up costing more than originally anticipated due primarily to high traffic volumes caused by new construction nearby not taking into account original plans for access off Airport Road through public open space adjoining city limits;[5][6][7] finally ending up resulting in increased vehicular congestion around City Hall annexe throughout most months while approved plans were being developed for expanding eastward onto Airport Road beyond city limits eventually leading eventually to an annexation request by neighboring townships seeking similar access pursuant to same government policy allowing municipalities within their borders to increase their populations without prior approval from other municipalities
