National guard gift history in Westminster Colorado dates back to the early 1800s. The first National Guard unit in Westminster was organized on July 4, 1876. At that time, the town of Westminster had only a handful of residents and there were no organized militia forces available to provide security. The citizens of Westminster formed their own militia company, the "National Guard Company," with help from local farmers and ranchers. The company continued to exist until 1906 when it merged with the Denver County Sheriff's Department. The first individual to serve as commander of the National Guard in Westminster was Captain John A. Gooding who served from 1876-1877. Captain Gooding is considered the founder of modern day national guard units in Colorado. From 1907-1910, Major General Hugh Fenton served as Commander of the National Guard in Westminster. After Major General Fenton's departure, Commandant James Hinchcliffe assumed command of the National Guard unit from 1911-1912. Commandant Hinchcliffe was succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel Lester Jowers from 1912-1920 and then Lieutenant Colonel Harry Wickersham from 1920-1925. During these years, National Guard Unit #1 (later known as 2nd Battalion) performed various duties within central Colorado including providing security for Expo '88 and other events held in Denver County during that period On December 2, 1941, 2nd Battalion became part of 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division (IAD) stationed at Fort Carson Army Airfield near Golden where they played an important role during World War II . In 1946 2nd Battalion became part of 3rd Infantry Division located at Lowry Hill Barracks before being reassigned to Fort Carson Army Airfield on December 15th 1951 . On October 9th 1957 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division vacated Lowry Hill Barracks and moved into Fort Lewis barracks east side where they remain today In 1990 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division relocated back to Fort Lewis barracks west side where they currently reside

Westminster is a small town located in Routt County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,472 at the 2010 census. Westminster was founded in 1887 by J.D. Haggerty and his wife and first post office opened in 1889. It has been home to the Westminster School District since 1912 and the Westminster-Lakewood School District since 1923. The town is named for John Hope Franklin, an early settler who settled there in 1876. The community of Westminster was platted on May 10, 1887 by J.D. Haggerty with land that he had purchased from the Davis family east of present-day Lakewood Boulevard and south of Highway 602. He named it after then British Prime Minister John Hope Franklin – one of several settlers to make their mark on this part of Western Colorado during its earliest days (see History of Routt County, Colorado). In 1912, when the original school district boundaries were redrawn following a reorganization of local education within Routt County, Westminster became part of that new district; it remained so until 1923 when it rejoined the old school district which still operates today (see History of Routt County Schools). The townstones from these earlier years are still found around downtown: The first stone was dedicated on November 11th, 1888; second stone on December 22nd 1890; third stone January 3rd 1902; fourth stone February 3rd 1903; fifth stone March 8th 1904…. In 1924 when much larger Lakewood Elementary School moved into its current facilities across Interstate 25 from what is now downtown Westminster proper (the current site where former North Park Elementary once sat), all but one building fromoriginallywestminsterelementaryschoolwere transferred to Lakewood as well….. Today’s downtown core includes two high schools—Lakewood Valley Academy and Westminster Jr./Sr High—a library/cafeteria complex including a movie theater/entertainment hall/arcade—and numerous shops and businesses including two banks as well as three churches (First Baptist Church & Missionary Baptist Church both built in 1922)

It is the county seat of Douglas County and was founded on October 14, 1864, by gold prospectors led by George A. Smith. At first named "Laramie", it was renamed Westminster after British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in 1868 on behalf of then-Governor John Hickenlooper in order to reflect Disraeli's position as education secretary for England during the Conservative government of Queen Victoria. The current name is based on English Prime Minister Theresa May's visit to Westminster Abbey in November 2018 as part of her tour through the United Kingdom.
