Westminster is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Westminster is part of the Westminster-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Westminster were the Ute tribe who named it "Waterville" after their village Waterville, Maine. In 1875, gold was found near the current town site and settlers began arriving from all over Colorado and Kansas to claim land for homesteads and mines. A post office called Westminster was established in 1881, and a station on the Laramie–Denver Railway were located here as well. By 1886 there were also two hotels in town which remain open today. In 1907, when Denver City Council decided that Aurora would be its new city limits, they annexed part of San Miguel County including parts of present day Westminster. At that time there were only 3 businesses in town - one grocery store and two hotels which remain today as constituent businesses within the boundaries of current day Westminster City Hall & McDonald's restaurant
