Westminster, Colorado is a town in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Westminster is located on the banks of the Animas River. It is bordered by Mesa County to the east and south, Canon City to the west and north, and Durango to the northwest. The first European settlers in Westminster were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1875. They founded a small town on what is now North Main Street close to where Fort Vallee now stands. The name "Westminster" was given to it by one of these missionaries as a way of referring to all of Mesa County as one place - much like London's "Whitechapel". In 1892, an act called for creating new townships within Mesa County and Westminster was included in that act. On December 2nd of that year, William Waddell named his township Westminster after himself and other pioneers who had helped bring civilization into this area. In 1907, when Junction Creek Reservoir became available for irrigation purposes within Flores Park Township (west of present-day downtown), additional land was added to make room for increased development in southwest Westminster along Animas River Valley Road near Easton Dam (now part of Interstate 25). This influx of new residents led to the nickname "The West Side", which stilltains today up until just recently when more recent arrivals have taken over much of that moniker including newer developments around Junction Creek Reservoir which are not considered part of Westminster proper any longer but form their own enclave east off I-25 known as Southtowne Center! In 1911 both Navajo and Central American immigrants working on construction projects along I-25 coming from Gallup Ranch near San Juan Elementary School stopped at Navajolando Rest Area on their way back east across Navajo Nation before continuing onto I-25 south; they left behind three horses Named Topeka Charlie (later renamed Wichita Bill), Little Topeka Joe & Roaring Buffalo – all still living today Racine Park deputies tell me about this night long stop !! That same year also saw West End Baptist Church come into being with its current location adjacent to Episcopal Gardens – providing housing for workers during those days before most people lived right next door or down the street! All these places started out as tiny farms with single family homes surrounded by open fields only later becoming neighborhoods dotted with single family homes while larger tracts remained agricultural or forested! Finally ushers in World War II when many families moved from their rural homes into small towns all throughout Western Colorado helping provide defense against Japanese aggression !! As hostilities continued outside Denver limits everyone gradually evacuated leavingbehind their property values then again increased access so properties could be purchased quickly no matter how little money someone had saved!! Lastly WWII ended but didn't end taxable value appreciation here because few if any people returned home during peacetime making it increasingly difficult regain earlier property values !! So much has changed since those early days we take for granted today but there’s something very similar about our community spirit neverchanging no matter what !!
