Wheat Ridge is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. It was founded in 1887 as a small farming community and has since grown to include an extensive retail and commercial district that covers most of downtown Wheat Ridge. The first settler in what would become Wheat Ridge was John Sutter, who arrived on horseback in 1887. A few years later he erected the first logging cabin on the site that now includes the plaza in downtown Wheat Ridge. The war also created new opportunities for businesses such as Wernham Hogg Paper Company which built one of Aurora's first large paper mills here (now known as Wernham Hogg Paper Company Building). After the war, however, economic stagnation set in and unemployment reached record levels until finally reaching pre-war levels late in the decade due to technological advances which led to increased commodity prices worldwide and skyrocketing steel prices within our own country. In 1951 Wheat Ridge became home to Rocky Mountain Laboratories Inc., an early stage laboratory for development of artificial intelligence (AI) through research into machine learning techniques then being developed by many universities including Carnegie Mellon University (then Pittsburgh), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University (Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory), Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/Computer Science Department/School of Advanced Study before becoming publically traded under the stock symbol "WRL".
