Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a city in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,735 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is located on the Southern Rocky Mountains and is adjacent to Colorado Springs. It is home to the University of Northern Colorado and Anschutz Medical Campus. The first people to live in what is now Wheat Ridge were Native Americans called the Kiowa and Apache. They hunted game in this area for food and trade goods. In 1849, John Cawthon founded an irrigation canal here as part of his ranching campaign against las Vegas (later Las Animas). He named his new town after himself, hoping that others would come to live near him because of its fertile land and water supply. In 1872, a post office was established in Wheat Ridge with the name "Anschutz." On July 16, 1916, it changed its name to "Wheat Ridge" after General George Custer's death during World War I. The city's original downtown core was built between 1909-1911 using plans by Denver architect Wallace Rice The white settlers who came to Wheat Ridge started arriving soon after they arrived in southern Colorado Territory through wagon trains augmented by horse teams running overland from Missouri City (now Mexico City), Texas (then San Antonio) and other points eastward along the Old Spanish Trail
