It was moved to Wheat Ridge on March 12, 1871 due to its location near Aspen Creek and Adam's Oak Creek valleys. Wheat Ridge is a small town in south-central Colorado, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is located on the banks of the South Platte River. The first settlers in what is now Wheat Ridge were families from Northern Ireland who arrived in 1814. They built a log cabin on the northeast side of what is now downtown Wheat Ridge. The first store was opened in 1824 by John McNulty and his brother Thomas McNulty. In 1830, George Wetherall became the first postmaster of Wheat Ridge. He also operated a sawmill and gristmill nearby. By 1860, there were ten stores and eighty-six businesses in Wheat Ridge. In 1896, wheat farmer Isaac Weir began growing wheat for local markets near his farmstead on North Main Street near present day Interstate 25 and Steele Road. Weir's mill became one of the most important commercial assets in Wheat Ridge during this time period; it ground large quantities of flour for local bakeries and other businesses as well as supplying seed to many farmers throughout central Colorado. In 1907, Weir sold his interests in his mill to James Hogg, who continued to operate it until it closed its doors in 1970. Between 1870 and 1910, Grain Growers' Cooperative Society (GCCS) grew rapidly out of control due to an overabundance of corn that resulted from new production techniques developed by CC&O Canal Company engineers based at Fort Collins yards adjacent to CC&O's original right-of-way across Weld County when cattle were introduced into that region three years earlier than had been anticipated or planned!
