Wheat Ridge is a small town in the United States located in Arapaho County. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a rich history dating back to 1868 when it was named "Wheat Ridge Station" after wheat that had been grown on its site by pioneers. The community was renamed to Wheat Ridge in 1914 and then again to Wheat Ridge in 1938. The history of Wheat Ridge can be traced back to 1868 when pioneer settlers arrived in Arapaho County and named their new community "Wheat Ridge Station." By 1914, the community had become known as Wheat Ridge due to its location near Fort Lyon and other military installations. In 1938, the name was changed yet again to Wheat Ridge due to concerns that another nearby village might take away residents' access to potable water supplies. The current incarnation of Wheat Ridge began development in the early 1990s when a group of entrepreneurs decided to start an agricultural production center in what had been farmland east of downtown Wheatridge. Over time, this center grew into one of Colorado's most successful farm businesses with operations spanning several acres across two neighborhoods: Gateway Park and Northgate Village. Wheat Ridge is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, located about 15 miles (24 km) east of Denver. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is known for its Gunpowder Monument and nearby Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Historic Site. The first people to live in what is now Wheat Ridge were the Kiowa and Arapaho. They may have arrived during the 18th century when traders passed through this area on their way to fur markets in Canada. The first permanent settler in Wheat Ridge was James Fenton, who built a cabin on the north side of Park River in 1819. The town began as a log cabin village founded by Fenton and his family. It grew rapidly because of its strategic location: it lay near two major trails that connectedDenver with Fort Laramie and Independence Rock, making it an important node on the early Colorado Trail. In 1836, Colfax Wickersham donated land to form what would become Wheat Ridge Township; he had moved from Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory to begin ranching operations there. The name "Wheat Ridge" was chosen for its similarity to the word "wheat." The first structure built in Wheat Ridge was a sod house erected by John Hulse in 1840. By 1850, wheat farming had become common here so much so that local newspapers began referring to residents as "wheat farmers." Of particular note are the pioneer mills operated by Samuel Morse & Company: this company manufactured flour and other products from wheat germ until 1870. One mill closed after only one year due to competition from larger mills; however, Morse & Company still remains one of Wheaton's most significant physical landmarks today! During prohibition era (1920- 1933), many businesses shuttered or changed business practices due to moral turpitude: some examples include drinking alcohol while employed/owned or living rent-free within walking distance of any public place where liquor could be purchased or consumed! In 1934, Wheat Ridge became part of Denver when it annexed all but three municipalities within Weld County including Aurora Heights and Westminster—a move which led eventually to Aurora becoming Denver's largest municipality by population size! In 1935-1937 two new high school buildings were constructed: Fields High School (now called Northside High School) and Parkdale Elementary School (now called Southside Elementary School). These buildings replaced older wooden schools which had been concurrently used as county jail cells since 1909 until they were demolished following remodeling in 1961-1964 under then Superintendent Harry Allbaugh Jr.). In 1937 also new roads were constructed through town - Main Street went eastward from downtown while Second Street ran northwest from there concurrent with Douglass Boulevard continuing southwesterly into Douglas County before terminating at Pikes Peak Boulevard just south of Bellefontaine Reservoir SWP). Wheatridge remained largely rural until 1955 when industrialization began affecting neighboring towns such as Aurora Heights which started manufacturing radios and television sets for military bases throughout Western USA beginning around 1945 simultaneously starting up businesses such as Otto’s Radio Shack next door on West 28th Avenue opposite Dearborn Park Zoo
