Wheat Ridge is a city located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The population was 134 at the 2010 census and is estimated to reach 190 by 2020. Wheat Ridge's rich history dates back to 1879, when it was founded as a small farming town on the eastern edge of what is now Denver. In 1907, Wheat Ridge became the first city in Colorado to be incorporated and reached its peak during the 1920s with growth in commerce, industry, and services. However, during the 1970s and 1980s local economic decline led to declines in population and employment until recently when city leaders have embarked on a variety of initiatives that are helping to revive Wheat Ridge's economy. The origins of Wheat Ridge date back to 1879 when pioneer farmers began trading goods with residents of nearby Denver for livestock. By 1907, wheat crops were being grown here for export, which led to increased trade with other cities such as Omaha and Chicago. Eventually, because of this growing trade relationship and advances in transportation technology, wheat-growing communities sprang up all over Colorado – one example being Aspinwall (now Delta), New Mexico where grain was exported to Kansas City before reaching downtown Denver. In 1910, Denver Mayor John Norvell proposed annexing Wheatridge into the larger municipality; however this idea met stiff resistance from settlers who saw annexation as an unnecessary move that would increase taxes without creating any new jobs or businesses. Instead, Norvell suggested that Wheatridge become part of a newly created park named after him – which eventually became Central ParkWest (today’s Lincoln Financial Field). Despite these challenges (and several others related to annexation), Whitestone quickly emerged as one of Colorado’s most important agricultural towns due in large part to its position on I-25 – immediately available for shipping shipments arriving from both eastbound Nebraska Highway 10 and westbound Interstate 25A south of downtown Denver. During World War II, many people living near I-25 made contributions towards building bombers used against Nazi Germany; some still stand today including Radio Hilltop Park & Museum where bomber crews gathered prior their missions; also within walking distance are two shopping malls: One called Glenwood Plaza which opened in 1984; while another located just off Interstate 25A known locally as “The Crossing”opened in 2001 adjacent to Uptown Platte Valley Mall across from Pepsi Center arena sports complex - both developments contributing significantly towards bringing retail traffic into town during those early years following 9/11/2001 terror attacks which resulted in significant reductions in business activity throughout much of southern Weld County resulting primarily from damage done by fireballs fired by American Airlines airplane wreckage parked at Kirtland Air Force Base concurrent with Christmas shoppers leaving Macy’s department store THANKFUL NOON! In light of current events many remember those days fondly while others view them more cynically given how AMERICAN AIRLINES RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THAT HAPPENED - WITNESSING THE LOSS OF LIFE AND MONEY IN LOCAL TOWN! Today there is renewed hope for recovery based on recent investment totaling $175 million announced recently through publicprivate partnership between central government entities ($100 million coming from The Wexner Foundation) along with private investments totaling an additional $50 million pledged by various commercial interests within our community forming what has come to be known as #WheatRidge Rebuilding Project
