Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a small town located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 5,348 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1868 by settlers from Illinois and Minnesota as a logging town to provide logs for local mills. In 1903, Wheat Ridge became an incorporated city with a population of 20,000 people. The mill made flour for local markets and exported it to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; Omaha, Nebraska; and other locations around the country. In 1903 it became part of the Colorado National Bank chain which included banks throughout Colorado until 1907 when bank consolidation led to individual national banks being created under the National Banking Act of 1913 In 1916 wheat grew so fast in Wheat Ridge that twenty-acre (10 hectare) lots were offered for sale at $1 per acre wheat prices were high enough so people could afford them even though they were not required by law to buy land wheat production increased during World War I due to government programs such as soil conservation
