Wheat Ridge is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is the third-largest city in Weld County and the second-largest in Use Township. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Area. The first resident to call Wheat Ridge home was John Wesley Powell on July 24, 1868. He surveyed a route for the Union Pacific Railroad through what is now Wheat Ridge and named it after himself - Wyoming Valley Railway Company Station (now US Highway 25). By 1870, when Walter Sitton started driving fur farms northwest from Denver into Weld County, he also established a ranch near present-day Wheat Ridge. In 1871 James Haggerty arrived from Erie County, Pennsylvania as one of the original settlers in what would become Wheat Ridge. In 1902 Jens Jensen founded Jens Jensen & Sons Inc., one of the first grocery stores in America with an upstairs wine cellar and indoor tennis court – this building still stands today on Avenue A east of town square (near First Baptist Church). The current store was built in 1925 on what used to be known as "Haggerty's Ranch". On July 16, 1898 two small fires burned out of control at Pikes Peak Brewery; they were quickly put out by local firefighters using hoses from their engines due to fears that such a large fire could cause extensive damage or even destroy the brewery itself. After these events, breweries began turning back away fromDenver for fear that another brewery disaster would scare away potential customers who might have otherwise patronized their establishments. This fear proved unfounded; within three years all but two Denver breweries had opened up shop in Aurora or Centennial because there were no other suitable locations available within easy reach of downtown Denver or its burgeoning nightlife district Anaconda Creek/Centennial Hills! This event signaled beginning of an era where Aurora would become not just a manufacturing center for beer but also becoming home to some of Colorado's most influential businesses including PepsiCo and Patents Analytical Laboratory fame! From this time forward Aurora would become known as "the brewing capital of Colorado!"

The first humans to live in Wheat Ridge were the Hidatsa people who arrived about 1775 and remained until 1868. The Spanish built Mission San José de las Vegas in 1813 and it became a rancho (a grant or title) from Mexico in 1827. In 1865, Philip Sturgis sold 1/2 acre of land northeast of present day Wheat Ridge to James Wickersham for $1,100. In 1881, Wickersham donated 2 acres east of the current downtown area to the Presbyterian church for use as an agricultural school lot. From 1895 until 1915, Wheat Ridge had its own post office which was known as "The Hill". On July 4th, 1915, Wheatridge became one of fourteen townships withinAdams County when it was created from parts of Logan Township and Northglenn Township.
