From then until 1949, the army stationed troops in what is now called Fort Stotsenburg. The fort was built to protect wheat growers from Apache and Sioux attack. Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a town in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wheat Ridge is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and straddles Weld County to its east and north. West of Wheat Ridge are Big Valley National Recreation Area and Park, which includes parts of Green Mountain National Forest; east of Wheat Ridge are Aspen Park District Chuckwalla Hills Open Space Preserve and Aspen Highlands Ranch Wilderness Preserve. The first European settlers in what is now Wheat Ridge were French Canadians who had arrived from Quebec in 1764. They named their land "Ridge" after a ridge in Scotland where they had been living since they left Canada. In 1800, two brothers, John Arapaho (1801-1872) and Salmon Peevey (1800-1885), started a wheat plantation near what is now calledmilepost 5 on US Highway 287. The family operated this farm until 1892 when it was purchased by General George Armstrong Custer for $10 per acre ($ in ). In 1902, Custer sold his share to oilman James Wickersham for $40 per acre ($ today). On December 5th 1904, Wickersham donated 3/4 acres (0.83 km²) to the City of Wheat Ridge as part of a deed that also included adjacent land that would later become known as Aspen Highlands Ranch Wilderness Preserve In 1927, local entrepreneur Julius Davenport developed an artificial ski resort called Crestline at what is now milepost 9 on US Highway 287 about 12 miles west of town center Crestline closed operations in 1961 but other similar resorts sprang up throughout North America over the next few decades including Winter Park Resort & Casino near Orlando FL in 1986 which became one of MGM Resorts International's largest properties; Granada Hills Resort & Casino outside Las Vegas NV in 1998 which became one of MGM Grand's largest properties; Heavenly mountain Lodge near Aspen CO USA Today has reported that there are currently over 100 ski resorts operating worldwide with skiing areas ranging from beginner to advanced In early 2006 it was announced by then Mayor Bob Crowley that due to increasing cost overruns with new construction projects around town he would be closing down all city services effective January 1st 2007 including police department functions while infrastructure upgrades will take precedence Overwintering services will still be provided through Snowmass Village Hotel while recreational activities such as snowmobiling and cross country skiing will continue at nearby Summit County Regional Airport

Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is located on the western edge of the Rocky Mountains and owes its name to the presence of wheat crops in the area for many years. The first settlers in Wheat Ridge were Presbyterians who came from Scotland in 1859. They built their first log cabin on the site of present-day Wheat Ridge in 1860. In 1865, Reverend John Aiken founded what would become The Presbyterian Church at Wheat Ridge. The church grew quickly and by 1870 had erected over twenty-five buildings including a school and bell tower. The Post Office at Wheat Ridge opened on January 1, 1870, and until December 31, 1912 it functioned as an important center for mail deliveries throughout Douglas County. One notable event that took place here was when General Ulysses S. Grant delivered his final speech from Fort Leavenworth during the American Civil War while he was stationed here before returning to America via train on April 12, 1865. In 1898, a fire destroyed most of downtown Wheat Ridge but not before causing extensive damage to several buildings including The Presbyterian Church which still stands today (albeit rebuilt). When World War II began there was great concern about possible German submarines lurking off our coast so on July 8th 1942 a new community development board (CDB) was created with jurisdiction over all adjacent municipalities within Douglas County east of Longmont called "Area X". Area X included much of modern day Wheat Ridge including parts of what is now Littleton and Northglenn counties; however no town or village within Area X received municipal treatment beyond developing plans for building roads, sidewalks and other amenities related to war production needs like housing barracks for troops and large stores necessary for fuel storage purposes etc.. In fact only one building – White Sands Missile Range – actually got built! 1/4 mile due north of CDB's original boundary line lies today’s Interstate 25 yards just outside Ofglen where shortly after Pearl Harbor Japanese naval forces attacked US Naval Forces based at Atchison Topeka Kansas resulting in devastating loss of life then President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all military installations be closed pending Investigation into What really happened….
