The United States Naval Reserve has been in existence since 1775, when the Continental Congress ordered the creation of a naval militia to protect America's coasts. The Navy was originally organized as a volunteer militia under the command of Major-General John Burgoyne. The first navy ship was built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1794. In 1860, with the Civil War raging and resources LIMITED, the Navy was merged into the Army and placed under its command. For over sixty years there have been no major wars fought by our navy outside of World Wars I and II; however we are always ready to support our military partners should one arise! Since World War II, we've deployed more than 50 ships and submarines around the world service members have come home with tens of thousands of items including watches, sunglasses, T-shirts and other assorted gear. Here is a sampling of some recent navy deployments: In FY2011 USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 78) departed Yokosuka Japan on her 5th deployment Deployment No 2 for Operation Neptune's Spear which consisted of hitting targets inside Syria using precision munitions from USS Decatur (DE 435). Then on 8/5/2012 USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 73) departed Naples Italy on her 1st deployment Deployment No 3 for humanitarian relief following Typhoon Irene which made landfall in Sicily on 7 August 2012 just days after devastating Hurricane Sandy . This particular deployment also included participation in strike operations against ISIS targets in Libya as well as providing air cover to coalition forces conducting strikes against ISIL positions near Palmyra AB. Wheat Ridge is a town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, United States. The population was 9,492 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Aurora-Lakewood-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Wheat Ridge were Nathan Bedford Forrest and his family who came to the area in 1859. A mill was built on the River White near what is now downtown Wheat Ridge in 1861 by Hiram Sibley and his son Isaac Sibley. In 1865, Major General Andrew J. Johnson called for a military expedition against Pueblo Indians and ordered Major General Philip Stoddard to lead an army through Wyoming into Colorado to suppression these Indian uprisings. Upon hearing about this request, Hiram Sibley donated land for a school system in Wheat Ridge which opened its doors on October 1, 1865 named after him – "Hiram Sibley School". In 1876, wheat was discovered along the Arkansas River east of Rifle and it became an important crop for Wheat Ridge residents because it could be grown without irrigation using surface water only. This new discovery led to increased trade between Weld County and surrounding counties as people began transporting their wheat north to Denver for marketable goods such as flour, meal, butter and cheese. The town's first store opened its doors on March 25th, 1881 - twelve years before Denver's incorporation as a city! Starting out as small farmers' markets with 50 customers per day selling local products from their homes, businesses soon grew larger with 350 customers per day served by 1990! With advances in communications technology that made it possible for shoppers all over America to purchase their groceries online or through catalogs delivered right to their doorsteps (no more waiting weeks or months!), grocery stores like Sam's Club quickly replaced independent merchants throughout central Colorado!
