Wheat Ridge is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 26,856 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge was founded in 1867 by John H. Chaffee and James Ewing as a small community on the east side of the Animas River. In 1924, Wheat Ridge merged with nearby Durango to form its present-day city. The original town site was on the south bank of the Animas River upstream from where it flows into the Little Animas River. The name "Wheat Ridge" may be derived from nearby Douglas Creek which emptied into the Animas River near what is now downtown Wheat Ridge; or from an early settler's pronunciation of "eka-waht" as "wheat." Chaffee and Ewing first called their new village Hee-Haw (meaning 'place where wheat is grown'), but this spelling was changed to Hee-Waht before it became Wheatridge in 1868 when they moved to their current location. The first post office opened in 1870, and served local farmers until 1879 when it became part of Durango. In 1904, Wheat Ridge incorporated as a city under state law and adopted a constitution modeled after that of Denver. On July 1, 1924, Wheaton Ridge merged with neighboring Durango to form its present-day city limits. At that time, Wheatridge had a population of 706 people andDurango had a population of 17,712
