In 1896, Wheat Ridge erected its first schoolhouse and soon became known for its white flour mills that produced fine flour for baking bread and other food products. The milling industry declined in the early 21st century but has been revived by a new generation of entrepreneurs who are working to keep the mills open and produce high quality flour for local markets. Wheat Ridge also has a strong academic presence with two major universities, University of Colorado at Boulder and Western Michigan University, as well as several smaller colleges and universities including The Citadel School of Art & Design, Vallouche High School and Cheyney Community College. Wheat Ridge is located in western Carbon County on U.S. Highway 362 east of Keystone Lake between Aspen and Arapaho Springs valleys about halfway between Aurora andDenver. It lies at an elevation of 6,826 feet (1,912 m). In 1802, Captain James Cook discovered another type of bean called "British Tactical Coffee." British Tactical Coffee became popular because it provided good cups of coffee without having to use many additional calories or cream. It wasn't until 1840 that someone developed the idea of brewing Tactical Coffee in small mugs rather than using large pots or baskets that would hold many beans at once. This person was Elias Howe and his team at Green Lion Roasters in New York City. Their first cup of Tactical Coffee was said to have been very successful and they quickly began manufacturing their own version using only the best Arabica beans available at the time.

Wheat Ridge is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. It was founded in 1868 by John Wheat and his brother-in-law George Armstrong. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The first white person to live in Wheat Ridge was James Hickey, who settled there in 1864. A post office called Wheat Ridge was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. The discovery of gold near Denver led to a rush of people to the Rocky Mountains for prospecting and mining operations began around 1870. In 1872, wheat acreage became available on the side of Mount Evans north of Wheat Ridge; this area became known as "Wheat Ridge." The first mill opened here in 1876 and continued production until 1907. By 1886, however, silver had become an important factor motivating miners to continue prospecting and mining; so much silver had been discovered that new mines were built throughout Weld County without necessarily contributing to the growth of Wheat Ridge. In 1902–03 a large woolen factory operated here for twenty years; it finally closed down due to competition from other mills statewide. However, during this time some fine flour products were produced here as well such as baking powder (1893), Roofers' cement (1910), cheese (1912) and lard (1920). A post office called "Wheatridge" was established at present day Wheatridge Avenue on July 10th, 1912; it continued service until it was discontinued on November 15th, 1916 due to changes in name assignments within the United States Postal Service system.
