Windsor, Colorado is a town located in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. It was founded in 1888 by John S. and Emma Ewing. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. In 1892, Windsor became the site of the first commercially successful coffee plantation in Arapaho County. The beans were grown on the property of Wm. Hickey and Sons until it was sold to James Fenton in 1922. The Fenton family continued to run the plantation until it closed in 1984. The town became a ghost town when oil production ceased there in 1984 due to environmental concerns about possible spills from nearby reservoirs used for oil production. Today, few residents remain and most of the buildings have been destroyed or are being renovated as business locations or tourist attractions.

The town became a boomtown due to its natural resources and its location on the edge of an Oregon-Mexico border area. By 1912, Windsor had reached a population of 25,000 people and it was renamed for Queen Victoria. In 1916, the United States Congress passed legislation giving Aurora, Colorado (then part of Greeley) to Windsor as a separate city. The city’s incorporation created many opportunities for growth for both cities. In 1961, Windsor merged with Greeley to become one municipality. Today, Windsor is home to a population of over 30,000 people and is known for its architecture and landscape features such as the river view park and downtown square.
Windsor, Colorado was founded in 1868 when John W. Windsor and his brother, George P. Windsor, came to the area from Missouri. The first post office was established in 1869; and the first settler in the town was Isaac Shepard. In 1870, a school was built and operated by the settlers for their children. By 1875, there were 10 residents in the town. In that year, a watermill was built and started operations; it continued to be used until 1927. A blacksmith shop opened in 1876; it closed down in 1928. A store opened on Main Street in 1880; it closed down in 1978. The first bank branch was established in 1886; it closed down in 1929. A church also opened up around this time: Trinity United Methodist Church became active as an organized religion within two years of its opening up (it would later become part of the Colorado Episcopal Church). The townsite that now includes Windsor received its name from General James Sully who fought at Little Bighorn during the Indian Wars (1876-77) while commanding Fort Lyon along with other units of the Ulysses S Grant's Army of National Defense
