Windsor, Colorado is a town located in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Windsor was founded in 1879 by the merger of two small settlements: East Windsor and West Windsor. It became a county seat in 1907. The first post office in Windsor was established on July 3, 1879, and served until it closed on February 26, 1886. The first settlers were John Aiken and his wife Elizabeth Aiken (née DeLaney). They arrived from Illinois in October 1878 and built a cabin near present-day East Windsor. In 1880 they bought a tract of land east of the Animas River for $1 per acre. They named their new settlement East Windsor after their home state east of the Mississippi River. In 1881 John Aiken erected the first schoolhouse in what is now Windsor. He also built a large barn which he used as a store and house until 1906 when he sold it to Mr. Wm Higginson who later donated it to the townspeople for use as an municipal building. Mr Higginson also built an addition to the building which still stands today known as the "Higgs House." The original post office operated at 9 N Main Street from 1886 to 1912; it was moved to its current location on State Avenue in 1912 due to flooding caused by heavy rains that year concurrent with another pandemic called SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). At that time there were only three mail carriers serving all of San Miguel County – one each from east Aurora, west Mesa Verde, and north Longmont – so business grew quickly thanks in part to rail transportation brought about by America’s first transcontinental railroad reaching Trinidad just north of town on December 12th, 1888 In 1893 Mrs Jane Bemis opened her own grocery store adjoining her husband’s store at 301 E Main Street; this became known as Jane Bemis & Company Ltd., later renamed Gorgon Grocery Store Incorporated after Mrs Bemis’ death in 1984 On February 2nd 1915 local residents voted 6-0 not to annex into neighboring Weld County following annexation campaigns conducted by both towns since 1912 The name “Windsor” won out over “Weld” because residents more likely associated Windsor with English cricket team playing at The Oval during England's tour of India that year while “Weld” had already been taken up by other nearby towns such as Aspen where golf courses had been developed adjacent to what is now downtown Aspen . When Colorado went Republican controlled under Governor George Adams in 1928 Republican Party Headquarters moved from Denver across I-25 towards Pueblo where they ran their primary campaign headquarters before going into exile across Mexico City . Windsor has been around since before there were towns in Colorado. In 1887, the first post office opened in Windsor and served the community until it closed in 1925. The first school was built in 1909 and served students until 1969. The first hospital opened in 1917 and served patients until 1971. The population of Windsor grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s, reaching a peak of over 100 residents in 1940. However, this growth stopped suddenly after World War II and the population declined to around 50 residents by 1960. Windsor experienced another growth period during the 1970s, but this time it reached its current level of around 30 residents by 1990.
