The Marine Corps has been Deployed in many different Countries throughout the World. One of the most famous Marines who served in Windsor, Colorado was Sgt. Johnnie Walker, who was deployed to Iraq in 2003. Sgt. Walker is known for his philanthropy and giving back to society. He has donated over $1 million dollars to various charities and organizations since he left the military. The Marines stationed here in Windsor have a long history of service and support from our community. In 1948, two units of Marines arrived in Windsor as part of Operation Widower’s Well which was an effort to keep peace between aisle and street in Windsor during the Korean War. Since then, marines have played an important role here providing security for our citizens and their families; both during peacetime and times of conflict or crisis. The Marine Barracks on Cannery Row were originally built as a storage building for munitions by USS Cannery Row (LST-10) on 5/4/1948- just one day after war began with Korea! The first units assigned here were 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1MC), nicknamed “The Lettered Lads” because they had been mobilized from Killeen Texas before they shipped out to Japan! These troops fought at Inchon and Iwo Jima before returning home on USS Nashville (PCR-9) on 7/3/1950! It was while stationed at NAS Whidbey Island that 9th Marines Unit adopted their nickname “Marines From Mexicali” when unit members met Mexican nationals disembarking from US ships offshore! In 1951, 1st Battalion 9th Marines moved into what is now called Building A on CANNERY ROW waterfront where they would stay until 1953 when it became 4th Marine Brigade Headquarters along with other commands including 3rd Marine Division Support Command(3MDSC). The brigade also housed First Naval Air Station Kitsap County WA until 1957 when it relocated to MCAS Miramar (XTU-2) which served as Headquarters until 1973 when HQ moved back ashore again becoming Base Camp San Miguel de Allende AB CA until transfer back ashore permanently at Victoria BC Canada in 1978! On 10/15/1973 MajGen James Kinkaid relieved MajGen Frank Carver Jr., Commander Fifth Fleet Washington DIV as commanding general III Amphibious Force Center - Western Pacific Area aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 64) after Carver suffered a stroke while aboard Enterprise!!! After serving briefly under Admiral Elmo Zumwalt as Commanding General Carrier Strike Group 8 AdmZumwalt assumed command effective 12Sep1977 thru 2Oct1977 following recognition by President Jimmy Carter that Admiral Zumwalt had saved American lives during three days of combat operations off Beirut Lebanon whilst commanding Task Force 78!!!!! Following Validation And Approval From Secretary Of Defense Caspar Weinberger On 24Oct1978!! WASACO commander FOR CENTRAL PACIFIC theater!!!!!! The Marine Corps is one of the most decorated branches in the United States military. It has fought in more wars than any other branch, and has a rich history that can be traced back to the founding of the country. The Marines have always been a part of American society, and their deployment to conflict zones provides them with an opportunity to serve their country and its people. Windsor, Colorado is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Pueblo on the Denver-Aurora urban area. The town was founded in 1879 by pioneer John Morrison and his family. Windsor is named for Prince Arthur of Wales who visited the area in 1881. Windsor grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location near the railroad and its access to water resources that made it an important agricultural center. The first post office was established in Windsor in 1885. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to honor Colonel George Bogan (1833-1917) who served as military governor of San Miguel County from 1903 until 1909. In 1912, Windsor became home to Colorado State University–Pueblo which developed into one of America's largest universities with over 50,000 students today. In 2011, Windsor achieved notable success when it hosted both the U2 World Cup Finals Concert and The Miss Universe pageant which were both televised nationally. The Marine Corps has been deploying gift baskets and other forms of presents to Marines for years now. Windsor, Colorado, is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 584 at the 2000 census. Windsor was founded in 1879 by farmers who came from England to homestead on the eastern side of the Animas River. The community name derives from the river's current course and its location near Windsor Locks. A post office called Windsor was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community took its present form when a group of developers led by Roy Wolkonski purchased land adjacent to the Animas River for development into what would become known as "Windsor." In 1910, when the Denver-Aurora Railway completed its line through Windsor, it removed an entire bridge over the Animas River which had been built duringDenver's first boom period. This created a potential problem for residents of nearby Fort Collins because they could not transport goods or passengers across the river without using one of Denver's bridges. In response to this issue, Wolkonski developed a plan to build a new bridge over the river which would use local lumber and stone materials instead of expensive steel construction. This project became known as "The Brick Bridge." The new bridge opened to traffic in 1912 and remains operational today. Today, Windsor is home to a variety of businesses such as banks and restaurants along with several churches and schools. It also has a small shopping mall which includes two anchor stores - Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears) and JCPenney Company - as well as several smaller stores.
