The Ansonia National Guard was organized in 1857 and consists of a full-time force of about 1,000 men. The Guard is responsible for the defense of the city, and its members are called "members." The Guardsmen serve two years without pay and then must serve another four years. They can be dismissed by their unit's commanding officer with cause. The Guardsmen have participated in many events throughout Connecticut's history, from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. Ansonia, Connecticut is a town in the towns of Ansonia and West Hartford on the border of Hartford County, Connecticut and Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 23,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New England metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Ansonia was John Winthrop in 1636. One early ancestor of current residents, Ezekiel Philips, donated land to form what is now downtown Ansonia. The town was chartered on April 14th 1814 by commissioners from twelve towns inHartford County and Middlesex County as "Ansonia". The original name for the town may have been chosen because it was one night's journey from Hartford City (then called Watertown). In 1846 when Ansonia became a state capital city under New York Statehood, it lost its distinction as an agricultural center to Norwich; however, it regained this title after becoming a bedroom community for Stamford and other nearby cities during the late 1800s. In 2000-2001, much attention was paid to efforts to improve public transportation options withinAnsonia limits following the discovery of two major oil refineries just outside its boundaries. This led to redevelopment of several neighborhoods near these refineries which has resulted in increased retail visitation and job creation within those areas. The dramatic increase in retail visitation has caused some concern that pricing pressures might lead to declines or even closures of local businesses if competition increases online or elsewhere; however no such concerns have yet arisen. Despite this potential downside, recent findings suggest that overall spending withinAnsonian limits remains high despite persistent economic weakness elsewhere inNew England
