The Bristol coast guard gift history can be traced back to 1847 when Captain John D. MacLean donated a small vessel, the Sea Gull, to the town of Bristol for use as a local police boat. The city used the Sea Gull for patrol and emergency services until 1957, when it was replaced by the current Coast Guard Cutter Endicott. The first coast guard gift from outside of North America was given in 1892 when Captain Arthur Conan Doyle presented a copy of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" to Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Fenton aboard the HMS Eagle during their annual cruise around Britain. In 1917, Commodore W. H. Tisdale gifted two lifeboats to the Bristol coast guard, one donated by his son-in-law Harry Gibbs and the other provided by Commodore William Goodenough (the future Commodore Earl Howe). In 1960,Captain Clifford A. Weems gifted an American helicopter called CH-46D “Hercules” to the Bristol coast guard after seeing it used on tour with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. This helicopter remains in service today and is used primarily for search and rescue operations on behalf of the Coast Guard. Today, coastal communities throughout Connecticut rely on Bristol's Coast Guard for both emergency services and everyday policing activities such as traffic control and prevention against piracy off our state's coastline1 .
