Hartford, Connecticut is a small city located in the central part of the United States. It was founded in 1665 by English colonists as Hartfordsville and became an official town on January 25, 1825. The population of Hartford reached 350,000 by 1860 and 500,000 by 1930. According to the 2010 census, Hartford has a population of 653,746. The city is named after John Hartford (1624-1694), an Englishman who came to America in 1630 and bought land near Springfield, Massachusetts. He built a log cabin here and called it Hartford because he had arrived there on May 10 of that year with his brother William. The first permanent settler in Hartford was Nicholas Sayers (1588-1656). He built a house here in 1698 and called it Newington House. In 1701 John Winthrop (1587-1649) came to Hartford from England and organized the first meeting of the General Court at Newington House. On July 5 of that year he petitioned for incorporation as a town over which he presided as Mayor or Chief Justice—the office then held by men only. On October 11th he published an ordinance setting out its boundaries: “Whereas since our settlement this place hath been much upon the Stage throughout these parts [New England], where many good meetings have been had among us; And whereas divers members thereof are now[er] living which we conceive may be fittest to continue so long under one government: Be it ordained therefore by them This ninth day of October A D C 1665” In 1712 Samuel Pownall moved from Stratford MA to build what would become known as Pownall Hall on Front Street in downtown Hartford. George Washington stopped at this spot on his way back from Mount Vernon during his stay at Windsor Castle on November 8th while en route westward along I-95 towards Quebec City. His grandson George Washington Custis visitedHartford again during his visit to America in 1838 when he took part ina parade through Hartford celebrating American Independence Day

After the Revolutionary War, Hartford prospered as a commercial center with shipyards and factories that produced goods for export.During the 1800s, however, Hartford experienced some economic decline due to population growth in other parts of Connecticut and New York City; although trade with these cities continued until after World War II. During this time, downtown areas such as Wall Street were redeveloped into high-rise buildings while smaller neighborhoods around Central Park were abandoned or left undeveloped.
