The United States Army was founded in 1775, and the Meriden Regiment was one of its first units. The regiment was formed in 1795 and became part of the 7th Connecticut Infantry Regiment in 1802. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), during which it participated in skirmishes and battles at Monterey, Monterrey, Cerro Gordo, and Chapultepec. In 1903, the regiment became part of the 9th New England Infantry Brigade and fought in World War I as a unit of the 1st Division. It was later reorganized as an infantry battalion and fought at Arras, Somme, Passchendaele, Cambrai, Vimy Ridge. In 1919 it became a regiment again and served until 1953 when it merged with the 8th Connecticut Infantry to form the 3rd Connecticut Infantry Regiment. Meriden, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 30,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bridgeport–Stamford–Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1812, Meriden was named for Samuel A. Morse and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Dodge. The first permanent settler in Meriden was Nicholas Goodrich who arrived in 1799. Goodrich's farm became a town site in 1812 when Samuel A. Morse and Ebenezer Dodge donated land to form the town of Meriden; they were both natives of Norwich, England. The original meridian which runs through the heart of Meriden forms one side of theQUadrangle seal or Wreath that symbolizes Our Lady Of Mercy Parish Church on North Main Street and it is also said that this design originated with Horace Greeley who designed it while he served as editor of "The New York Tribune". According to some sources, many buildings in downtown Meriden date back to before 1800 including needlepointers' shops on Broad Street and blacksmiths' workshops on State Avenue (now home to Norwalk Mall). It should be noted that there are several theories about what started as an unpaved street in central Meriden leading from Main Street to where today's Waterbury Square stands – it has been variously suggested that it was a seasonal pasture used by farmers until sometime after 1830 when a road was built; alternatively, it may have been part of the Underground Railroad route connecting abolitionists living near Hartford with freedom seekers living further north. Meriden, Connecticut was once a thriving town located in the central region of the state. It is now a small, rural community that experienced significant growth during the late 19th century. The town first began to form in 1776 when settlers from Hartford arrived in what is now Meriden. By 1800, Meriden had become an important cultural and economic center due to its location on the border of Rhode Island and Connecticut. In 1812, following the War of 1812, Meridens residents voted to incorporate as a town. The town enjoyed rapid growth during the remainder of the 19th century thanks to its strategic location and many enterprises such as stores, mills, churches, schools and hospitals. Despite this success however,MERIDEN struggled during World War II as it was directly impacted by both belligerents. After the war however, MERIDEN regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community forHartford while also becoming home to several colleges and universities including Brown University and Yale University.
Meriden is a town in the Connecticut Valley region of the United States. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Meriden–Oxford, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent inhabitants of what is now Meriden were two Mohawk chiefs, Seneca and Cornplanter, who arrived there in 1664 from upstate New York. They built a small village on the east side of river Thames and named it after their home place, Cornplanter's Hill in upstate New York. In 1701, General Israel Putnam led an army against British forces at Battle of Bunker Hill, which resulted in his death; his troops then retreated to Connecticut Colony for reflection and consolidation. Colonel John Trumbull took command and moved his headquarters to what is now downtown Meriden about this time. On April 8, 1765, during King George III's War with France (the French and Indian War), Samuel Prescott became military governor at Fort Stanwix on Long Island Sound opposite Manhattan; he quickly erected two square blocks on North Main Street as barracks for 1,200 men under Major Robert Treat Pemberton. On July 5 following this victory over French forces under Pierre-Charles L’Enfant near Saratoga Springs by land attack as opposed to naval action—the first major American victory against European powers—Trumbull ordered construction of a fortification called Fort Tryon nearby where present-day Park Street meets Tryon Square today’s plaza within view of Trumbull Hall on State University Campus across from Yale law school). Meriden residents had long been supportive of Continental Army units garrisoned along or near their community due to its strategic location midway between Hartford and Saybrook (then part of London) on one side and Danbury (now part of Waterbury) on the other while also benefitting economically from its abundant agricultural resources including potatoes grown in ponds borderingthe Thames River between downtown Meriden and Old Lyme Village northward until 1814 when those ponds were drained for draining purposes creating what are today Enterprise Road eastward to Route 4 exit southward past Sunnyside Cemetery thence northeasterly along present day White Haven Road past Ansonia into Stamford before turning southwest onto modern day Union Avenue/Route 9 southward through Congers Junction onto modern day USRoute 12 westbound passing through Congers Chapel entering Stamford just prior to reaching Rte 12's eastern terminus at Rte 12 & Rte 9 intersection British troops burned down Trumbull Hall December 15th 1775 during their retreat from Boston ending the war with Great Britain
