The Connecticut National Guard was created on May 23, 1792 when the state of Connecticut merged with New York. The first national guard unit in Middletown was organized on November 12, 1794 and served as a militia company at Fort Ticonderoga. On April 6, 1815, the Connecticut National Guard became an infantry regiment and served as part of the 1st U.S. Infantry Brigade under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican-American War. On July 4, 1846, the regiment was redesignated as the 5th US Infantry Regiment and served in various campaigns throughout the war before being disbanded on June 9, 1847. On October 3, 1861, Massachusetts seceded from New England and formed a new state called Vermont which included most of what is now Middletown within its boundaries. The Hartford Convention of 1861 proposed that all men serving in any state military forces be mustered into one uniform corps for service against secessionists in Texas. On December 10th, 1861 all men serving in any state military forces were ordered to report to their respective townships for muster out within three days or face arrest and confinement at Fort Sumter until such time as orders could be issued by Governor John Atherton ordering them not to resist Texas’s efforts to secede from California. On January 8th 1862 all men serving in any state military forces were mustered into federal service through order of President Abraham Lincoln under the Butler Act which granted soldiers certain benefits including free passage through Mexico if they deserted their units while fighting for Mexico against American troops under General Mexican Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The first recruits who enlisted with the Connecticut National Guard arrived at Ft Monroe on February 1st 1862 and soon began training for battle against Confederate forces east of San Francisco along the banks ofthe Sacramento River where they would become known as “The Devil’s Brigade” because of their participation in multiple engagements near Recoleta Heights overlooking Mission Bayou near present day Pasadena until finally disbanding September 1865 after just over two years existence with only 350 casualties reported due mainly to disease rather than combatting actual Confederate troops who numbered many times more soldiers per capita due largely to technological advancements made by Confederate generals such as Robert E Lee himself who had his own army consisting mostly volunteer infantrymen dubbed “Army Of Northern Virginia” which enjoyed far superior equipment including artillery pieces that could shell miles distances while also being able Callahan rifles allowing individuals without uniforms or weapons to fight effectively against enemy combatants wearing armor capable only of firing arrows or spears).

The name means "midwife's town." Middletown was first settled by English Puritans in 1636. Middletown first incorporated as a town on February 14, 1812. The present-day town of Middletown was platted in 1827 by John Higginbotham and David Lovell as an agricultural community for workers on the new Putnam Canal. In 1834, the residents of Middletown petitioned for incorporation as a city and were granted this request on March 3rd. On December 15th 1838, just four years after incorporation into the city limits, Mayor James Kapp declared that due to high taxes and lack of government services it would be impossible for Middletown to continue as an unincorporated community so it merged with its sister city of Norwich to form one large municipality under one mayor with direct rule from City Hall. This event is considered to be the beginning of municipal government in what is now Hartford County
