Milford, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 33,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Hartford–Bridgeport combined statistical area. The town is named after Sir Christopher Milford (1593-1665), an English soldier and landowner who fought for the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. He built a mill on the river Thames in 1640 to produce flour for his army. Milford became one of the most important center of production in Connecticut, and its mills continue to be used today. In 1814, Milford was chartered as a village by act of Congress under the name "New London". The first post office was established in 1817 and continued until it closed on July 1, 1903. Milford experienced two major fires: one which destroyed much of downtown in 1872 and another which burned down many homes in 1906. Both fires were quickly extinguished by firefighters using their hose lines as weirs; however they did create some damage to buildings that could not be rebuilt. Milford is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 16,959 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Milford was Nicholas White who arrived in 1764. The town formed from part of the original Hartford Township on December 12, 1810. It took its name from John Milford who helped organize and lay out Hartford Township. The townsite of Milford was first settled by English Protestants on April 20, 1765 when Richard White and his brother-in-law Samuel Hall set out for New London with three horses and five barrels of flour to trade goods with the Indians. They soon realized that there were no farms available close enough to offer them any practical assistance so they returned home empty-handed and began to look for land elsewhere. They found it possible to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) of forested land south of the river which they called "New Milford". On July 1, 1786, they laid out a new town - now known as "Milford" - on this tract of land which saw rapid growth over the next few years due largely to their successful commercial enterprises. One such success was Whites' Tavern where travellers could order refreshments while they waited for their boat or wagon ride back downriver; owner Nicholas White had built this inn specifically for this purpose during the Revolutionary War period when travel between New York City and Boston was extremely difficult and dangerous without hospitable accommodations along the way. In addition to Whites' Tavern, other important early businesses included Paine's store (established 1787), Fenton's gristmill (1791), Crandall & Griggs general store (1804), Gurney's livery stable (1811). These establishments aided in building strong community ties which would continue well into the 21st century. During much of this time there were very few transportation options other than foot or horseback travel across country so these businesses thrived thanks to their customer base as well as their excellent infrastructure including a large public square where locals gathered each morning for market transactions andassembly meetings; today you can still see evidence of these activities throughout downtown Milford!
