The Coast Guard has been providing aid and assistance to the people of Norwalk, Connecticut since 1853. The first Coast Guard Station in Norwalk was activated on October 25, 1853. Since that time, the Coast Guard has grown to be one of the most popular organizations in Norwalk. Today, the Coast Guard is responsible for a wide range of services including search and rescue; maritime security; water safety; coastal erosion control; disaster relief; and environmental protection. In addition to its traditional duties, the Coast Guard also conducts a variety of research and training programs which help improve maritime safety and security. Prior to this law, contributions had typically been made through private individuals or foundations rather than by government leaders themselves. Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut. The population was 15,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worthington Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2016 census, Norwalk had a total population of 26,711. The first settlers in what is now Norwalk were Congregationalists who arrived from Vermont in 1638 and founded Wethersfield, Connecticut on the north shore of Long Island Sound. In 1662 they moved to what is now Norwalk and founded a new town on their farm called Newtown because there was no land available for them to purchase near New Haven, which then lay to the east. The original name Newtown was changed to Norwich in 1664 because England's King Charles II granted a charter for Stamford (later Watertown) Township on Long Island Sound to be called Norwich after his coronation at Westminster Abbey. Norwich grew rapidly due to its location and privilege as one of four townships within Hartford County that received special charters from Crowned Heads James I and II for large-scale industry; this growth led to increased competition among adjacent townships and led to the merger of two neighboring townships into Norwich in 1868: Northwich (now Danbury) by incorporation with Stratford; Southwick by annexation with West Warwick. On July 1, 1892, during consolidation proceedings following the Hartford–Worthington merger, all but three precincts within Norfolk Township became part of Watertown when that township merged with Norwich into one municipality pursuant to state statute No. 514/92 entitled "An Act To Consolidate Municipalities InHartfordAndWorthingtonCounties". Work began on white elephant projects such as completing streetlights throughout town while also building sidewalks and improving drainage systems; however these efforts were abandoned before completion due to low voter turnout in local elections that year. The Coast Guard was formed on April 15, 1915. They serve as the first national security service in the US. The Coast Guard has a rich history that goes back to 1915 when it was created as a result of the Panama-Pacific International Treaty. At that time, there were no proper means for cruise ships to navigate through the stormy Pacific Ocean and so the US Congress decided to create a service to help protect commerce and navigation. Norwalk is an incorporated town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 15,504 at the 2010 census. The town was first settled in 1635 by people from Lyme Regis, England. It became a separate township in 1836. The name "Norwalk" comes from the ancient English place of the same name and meaning "place of peace." In 1792, the British Admiralty decided that Norwalk should be a part of Hartford because then it would have been closer to London than Norwich. Norwalk's first store opened in 1808 on Main Street between State and Church Streets. A post office was established at Norwalk in 1812 and remained active until 1865. In 1830, one-half mile west of what is now Main Street an area called New Canaan was founded by Congregationalists and contains some of Norwalk's earliest buildings including Meeting House No 7a (now within Yale University). In 1860, Nicholas Pratt began to grow hops for beer production on his farm east of town corner Brookside Road and main street near where present day Shakespeare Boulevard meets State Street.
