Norwalk is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 23,565 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford Combined Statistical Area. The first European settlers arrived in 1664, and the town received its current name from Norwalk Haven, which was founded on New Year's Day in 1714 by Nicholas Norwalk and Joel Chandler Harris. In 1824 it became a city under the name of Waterbury. On July 1, 2002, Norwich became an independent city governed by its own mayor and council with a separate budget and government structure from that of Norwalk. The origins of retail shopping in Norwalk date back to 1865 when John Whetstone opened his first store on Main Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. His stores were followed by others until 1924 when Waterbury City began developing downtown as an area specifically for retail development with large parking lots for shoppers along Second Avenue between Broadway and First Street. At that time also came the arrival of department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Inc., JCPenney Co., Montgomery Ward & Co., Allied Signal Corporation (Auromex), Kressner’s Department Store (now Fisher-Price) and Bamberger’s Department Store (now Wegmans). By 1961 there were over 150 stores located within two blocks of each other on two main streets downtown; Main Street between Broadway and First Street and Second Avenue between Broadway and Third Avenue In 1962–1963 work began on what would become known as Park Place – or simply Park – which would eventually become one of Downtown Waterbury's most popular tourist destinations hosting events such as art exhibitions, concerts, shows featuring major talent from around Connecticut as well as international visitors drawn to its array of restaurants including steak houses like Prime Minister’s Palace Lunch Room*, Alfredo’s pasta place* * note: this location no longer exists

Norwalk is a city in Connecticut, United States. It is the seat of Norwalk County and was founded on December 16, 1764 by Loyalists from New York City. The population was 63,671 at the 2010 census. The city is located within the Hartford-New Britain metropolitan area. Norwalk has been home to a variety of cultures and industries over its history. Its history includes waves of English, Irish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and Slovak immigrants as well as Jews who began arriving after World War II. Today's Norwalk community contains many descendants of those immigrants as well as others who have arrived since then. The first permanent settler in what is now Norwalk was John Glover in 1764. He created a small farmstead on the east side of town near modern day Second Street and High Street. In 1768 he married Sarah Stone from Stratford-on-Avon and they started to build a house there on their new land which would later become known as "Stone House". They also acquired some additional land south of current Fourth Street and east of First Avenue; this property became known as "Glover's Hill". In 1801 John Glover had two more children: Emmeline (1802-1892) and Alfred (1804-1892). Alfred became an attorney practicing in Springfield before moving to Norwalk in 1827 to open his own law practice with his brother George Washington Glover Jr.. In 1865 Alfred died suddenly while out walking his dog; thus ending Alfred's formal legal career but leaving him one step closer to achieving success firsthand than most attorneys achieve through professional training alone. John Elisha Whitehead moved into Norwalk in 1873 when he bought part of the old Holmes Tavern where he met his wife Esther (née Bloomfield) that year while she was working at the local millinery store run by her mother Mrs. John Atherton – Esther worked at various stores until she married Whitehead in 1875 after earning her education at Phillips Academy School for Girls in Andover MA USA where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors degree in eighteen months! Esther soon found herself pregnant again so whitehead decided to move back home permanently with their daughter Nancie for four years prior to giving birth when Nancie enlisted in US Army during WWI spending time stationed overseas including being present during armistice that ended hostilities between America and Germany; upon return from deployment Nancie gave birth to her only son Harry Truman (1912-) who would go onto serve two terms president Ulysses S Grant Woodruff Ulysses S Grant Woodruff born 1912 - Listing given here courtesy Ron Fournier
According to the Norwalk Historical Society, American Revolutionary War veteran, Major General Israel Putnam, served in this town in 1777. The first paper mill was built in Norwalk by Andrew Cunningham in 1837. The town's population increased rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its proximity to Hartford, Connecticut and other major cities. In 1912, Norwalk became a city with its own government and services. Today,Norwalk is known for its rich cultural history and diverse attractions.
