Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 17,691 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Hartford County and part of the larger New Britain metropolitan area. Norwalk was settled by English colonists in 1664 as Norwalk Plantation on land that now includes much of downtown Hartford. The town's first school was built in 1668 and its first courthouse was erected in 1701. In 1818 it became a separate municipality with its own government and courts. The townsite at Norwalk Heights was annexed to Hartford in 1849 and the name change to Norwalk after then-Mayor Wm. Hickey Norris. In 1916, during World War I, Norwalk became one of four communities subscribed to the National Defense League because they were within striking distance of military installations east of New York City. In 1933, when new state laws made it an unincorporated village, Mayor Leonard Rowe proposed changing the name back to Norwalk so that residents might more easily find their way around without feeling like they had no official home or jurisdiction. This idea won approval from both the town board and from voters who ratified a resolution urging Rowe to make Norwalks "the most important center for economic development" within Hartford County. In 1968, following passage of the Civil Rights Act Amendments via referendum,Norwalk become one of five municipalities (along with Bridgeport*, Stamford* and Waterbury*) which adopted ordinances prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race or color throughout their jurisdictionsEffective January 1st 1969 municipal officials were empowered to order segregation by law enforcement officers acting pursuant to such orders if necessary for public safety
Norwalk was founded in 1664 by John Norwalk and his wife, Susanna. The town was named for the river that ran through it.
