Norwich is one of the smallest towns in Connecticut and has a population density of only 2,812 people per square mile (1,043/km²). Norwich's total area is just over 10 square miles (27 km²). Norwich was first settled by English colonists in 1638 as part of what became Hartford County. The first post office for Norwich was established in 1795. The town developed rapidly due to its location on the Mystic River and its access to transportation including steamboats that crossed the river from New Haven to Stamford. In 1847, Norwich became an independent city and retained many of its cultural and social traditions such as incorporation into a mutual aid society and prohibition of liquor sales. However, Norwich lost some key economic assets when Bridgeport annexed it in 1907; consequently, there has been little recent growth for Norwich other than housing development which began during the late 1990s recession. The present-day downtown core of Norwich was built between 1911 and 1913 following the completion of Interstate 95 which connected Hartford with New York City via Waterbury and Danbury respectively. North End Avenue served as the main artery through town until it was widened in 1925 and connected to I-95 southbound at Exit 15A near where present day Elm Street meets Main Street; this gave new life to oldStreetskiek Alley which had been long abandoned since construction ceased nearly fifty years earlier! Today's downtown core includes a variety of businesses including three banks (Wells Fargo Bradley & Co., JBL Financial Services Inc., TD Ameritrade), two large shopping malls (Target Corporation et al.), several restaurants/bars/cafes/diner chains (Taco Bell et al.), two Masonic Lodges - Brownstone Lodge #326F & #328D - as well as numerous smaller stores unusual for Connecticut ( Farmers Market Cooperative creamery) or other parts of America (<10 sq mi size). To its east lies Old Saybrook State Park with typical Long Island landscape features such Asphalt Road running along its perimeter while wetlands stretch across both borders providing ponds for fishing on one side while former cornfields are visible from Route 9 on the other side making this an excellent spot for bird watching!
Norwich, Connecticut was one of the original towns in Hartford County. It was platted on October 12, 1764, by Dr. George Washington and Samuel Gregg. The first post office in Norwich was established on December 1, 1765. On July 8, 1814, Norwich became a part of the state of Connecticut when it was split off from neighboring New Haven County. Norwich is currently ruled by the city of Norwich Mayor Annette Kapp-Griffin and boasts a population of over 60,000 people as of 2019.
