The name Shelton derives from the 17th century English settlement of Snellaston and its location on the main route between London and New York City. The first settler in what is now Shelton was Nicholas Snelling who arrived in 1656. He built a log cabin on the east side of Shoal Creek which still stands today. In 1820, John Morse bought land adjacent to where Shelton now stands and began developing it into a town site. The first store opened in 1824, and by 1830 there were ten stores in town. In 1836-37, Samuel Tilton built a large mill whichemployed more than fifty workers; it remain one of the largest mills in Connecticut until it closed its doors for good in 1908. The popularity of manufacturers like Tilton led to an increase in trade with England; however, after World War II many manufacturing jobs either left or were moved out of Shelton because of automation technology such as automatic looms used during that time period. However, some businesses have continued to operate such as First National Bank which has been open since 1865 and First American Bank (now JPMorgan Chase) which opened their doors on Main Street back when this street was called "Broadway"
