Artisan Coffee has a long and proud coffee history in Stamford, Connecticut. The first espresso machine was built in 1896 by Luigi Bevilacqua, who ran a small grocery store on the east side of town. The coffee house that Luigi’s shop became known for served Italian-made coffee until the early 1900s. In 1906, Giovanni Battista Belgio opened his own cafe on State Street in Stamford. Belgio was the first to sell pre-packaged ground coffee beans, which he did from his home. His beans were sold by weight or quantity and wereribed with a variety of delicious flavors such as “Carolina”, “Santo Domingo”, and “Parmesan”. By 1912, Artisan Coffee had signed a lease for space at 405 Main Street in downtown Stamford. The new building housed an opera studio and later became the Stamford branch of CBS Radio Corporation (now US News & World Report). In 1937 Artisan Coffee moved into their current location at 10 E Exchange St., just north of downtown Stamford. At the time of its opening, Artisan Coffee boasted one of the most unique Sweeney machines on the market – it used two large metal tanks to brew each cup of coffee. This unique equipment required complex set up and took some time to get going but eventually allowed customers to enjoy fresh brewed coffee right where they stood thanks to an automated brewing process! In 1951 Artisan Coffee began selling bean bags instead of cups/tubs like most businesses at that point! Bean bags gave customers more control over their drink experience as they could choose how much water or milk they wanted added to their bag before serving! It wasn’t until 1973 that fully automated espresso machines started being offered which made enjoying your favorite artisan cup even easier!
