Torrington, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 25,513 at the 2010 census. Torrington is part of theHartford–New Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1764 by settlers from Massachusetts as a farming community on the east bank of the Merrimac River. In 1806, it became an incorporated village and changed its name to Torrington in honor of General John Forbes Torrington who fought against Britain in the War of 1812. The first store in Torrington opened its doors on Main Street on October 24, 1764. By 1800, there were 13 stores and 3 taverns open in town. A post office was established at Torrington on March 10, 1806. In 1830, incorporation fortorringale was granted with a population of 934; however this number decreased over time and by 1840 only 7 businesses remained open within the limits of what is now Torrington Village Park. In 1903-1904, a new cotton gin was built north of present day Center Street to replace an older one that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. This project was led by Congregationalist minister Revd Samuel Morse and financed through his gift to the town which has been called "the grand experiment" because it involved building an entire new township with no prior planning or consent from residents or officials save for some small changes made during construction such as enlarging the public square (now Meeting House Square) into a park area adjacent to Schoolhouse Hill Road). It replaced an earlier cotton gin located west of Center Street near where Post Office Square stands today which had operated since 1692 However even though it lasted until 1904 it did not actually result in any real increase in production as larger mills began operating within minutes of opening their gates after being able to see how efficient Morse's new plant could be. In 1909-1910 Mayor Prentice Higginson proposed that all businesses within limits should be closed down and consolidated into one large store so as to reduce competition and improve prices for consumers while still allowing merchants freedom to set their own prices without government regulation; this plan met with approval from both business owners and local politicians but when implemented no significant changes took place other than increased prices for consumers although there may have been some reduction in overall business activity due to newly available transportation options becoming available outside Oftown following World War I However things changed dramatically after World War II when many factories were relocated out Oftown creating numerous opportunities for job growth especially along Interstate 95 providing much needed direct access to jobs throughout much of eastern Connecticut . However despite these advantages Townspeople decided they didn't want another big city center developing next door so they passed a resolution nullifying Mayor Higginson's plans calling instead for "a more intimate relationship between the people living here" which would eventually lead to development around Schoolhouse Hill Road including today's Marketplace district home Toombs Mall although this effort failed again due largely to opposition from downtown business owners who saw this development as another major threat rather than opportunity

Torrington is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Torrington was first settled in 1639 by English colonists and became part of the Hartford Colony in 1664. The town name may be derived from an early settler's Indian name, Tuckahoe. The world-renowned manufacturer of typewriters, IBM, had its beginnings here in the 1920s when it bought a small machine shop from local entrepreneur George Fisher. In 1960 IBM merged with Remington Rand to form International Business Machines (IBM). Today IBM is one of America's leading technology companies and employs over 100,000 people worldwide including 400 employees in Torrington. In 1814 Samuel Morse founded or started work on the Morse code telegraph system that allowed communication between American towns without having to go through London. Morse also built a wooden depot here to house his equipment and materials for this new venture which he called "the Telegraph Office." This building still stands on Main Street today and can be seen from across Route 9k as part of the Torrington Museum complex. It is now used as a restaurant. As locomotive manufacturers grew larger during World War II, Torrington worked closely with Westinghouse Electric Company to build production plants for their military vehicles here at what is now known as “White Sands” Plant Number One (WSPO1). WSPO1 produced tanks and artillery guns for America's war effort during World War II; it was also home to the world’s first nuclear reactor – the self-contained BNFL plant – which fueled America’s atomic weapons program starting in 1945 until shutdown in 1968 after two decades of operation! It wasn't just production plants like WSPO1 that were important during wartime; also key were research laboratories such as Bell Laboratories which developed fiber optics and digital computers while working out of White Sands Plant Number Two (WSNP2), then known as “New Mexico Station” because it operated out of Albuquerque New Mexico; Radio Shack went on to become one of America’s largest electronic retailers while GEICO provided insurance services for both Customers & Employees at WSPO1 & WSNP2!
