The National Guard was founded on July 15, 1792, as a Patriotic Society of the United States to provide for the defense of the nation. The organization grew rapidly and by 1812 it had detachments in all fifty states. The National Guard was granted full military status by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 and organized into brigades under U.S. Military Districts. In 1924, the National Guard was reorganized into divisions with battalions as unit smallest units and organized into brigade groups with headquarters located at divisional level. In 1975, Divisional level commands were redesignated brigade groups which in turn were redesignated brigade commanders (the first such designation being given to Major General James Moseley). Since 1999, the commander of each National Guard division has been designated as a lieutenant general or major general instead of a colonel or brigadier general because their rank does not correspond to that of regular Army officers who hold those positions at divisional and brigade levels respectively.
West Haven is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. West Haven is part of the Stamford–West Haven–Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Congregationalists in 1764 and incorporated on February 15, 1802. West Haven has a rich history dating back to its founding as a Congregationalist hamlet. The original settlers were Methodists who arrived from Manchester, England in 1764. In 1802, the town became part of what would become Stamford Township and its namesake developed into one of the most successful commercial towns in Connecticut during the 19th century.The Post Office was established at Westhaven on October 8, 1800. A school district was organized in 1911 and later merged with Norwalk School District No. 2 to form Norwalk-West Haven School District No. 1 which continues to operate today as a public school system with students from both towns sharing one building located on Main Street between Beach Road and State Street until 2018 when it relocated to an enlarged facility off Park Avenue near Easton Avenue
West Haven was founded in 1635 by Increase Mather and his wife,Sarah. The town became a part of the Connecticut Colony in 1664. It received its charter as a Village in 1702. In 1800, West Haven had a population of 4,000 people. The Panic of 1837 caused a decline in population and businesses; however, the town regained some stability during the post-panic boom years. From 1860 to 1880, West Haven experienced an influx of refugees from New York City due to the American Civil War; this led to increased development around Main Street in west-central West Haven. In 1896, West Haven became home to Yale University after merging with other towns within the former colony of Connecticut. It has since become one of America's largest universities with over 40 undergraduate colleges and graduate schools as well as several dozen research centers and laboratories.
