Navy gift history in Wilmington, Delaware began with the build of the USS Constitution on May 13, 1797. The ship was built as a privateer and captained by John Paul Jones. On November 10, 1798, the Constitution was seized by the United States Navy and commissioned into service as a frigate under Captain James K. Polk. In 1821, Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered USS Pequod to be built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for use in river patrol operations against Spanish ships in Texas. Soon after construction began on December 12th of that year, Commodore James Farragut assigned USS Pequod to serve as flagship of River Squadron One when that squadron sailed from New York City for its first mission; blockadeading Mexico’s Gulf Coast during the Mexican-American War. After six months deployed in this new role, Admiral Porter relieved Commodore Farragut and reassigned USS Pequod back to River Squadron One command effective February 1st, 1824. During their time with River Squadron One, USS Pequod destroyed three Spanish warships-the Albacete San Juan de la Cruz (1824), Santa Catalina (1825), and Victoria (1826) while displacing 12 tons of munitions each-and captured eighteen vessels totaling 746 tons total weight! USS Constitution Museum: A History The USS Constitution Museum is located within walking distance of most parts of Wilmington including its wharf area where visitors can view replica cannons used during naval engagements dating back to1797 and other historical artifacts from the ship’s days afloat both before and after her donation to the city in 1912. The museum also has an attractive collection of uniforms worn by sailors on board during American Revolutionary War battles such as those fought off Norfolk Neck in 1775 or Siege Of Boston Harbor in 1768! The museum is open Monday through Friday 9am-4pm EST; Saturday 9am-3pm EST; Sunday closed due to federal holidays

Wilmington, Delaware is a city in New Castle County, Delaware. The population as of the 2010 Census was 47,145. Wilmington is the only municipality in New Castle County and the third-largest municipality in Delaware after Dover and Camden. It located on the mouth of the Christina River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Philadelphia and 26 miles (39 km) south of Wilmington. The history of Wilmington goes back to 1699 when Nicholas Sprague built a trading post on the banks of the Christina River for his friends and family. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1764 when Captain John Dennison's party landed at what is now known as Wilmington Landing on nearby Georgetown Island. The town was named for General George Washington who had traveled through this area during his military campaigns against Great Britain in 1755-56. In 1831, Henry Clay helped to create Delaware’s Constitution by voting on its adoption at a special session at which he also served as its first governor. By 1840, Wilmington boasted more than 100 buildings including 10 churches and several stores/councilhouses that still stand today. In 1849, an act was passed authorizing creation of a new city government within limits already existing within Delaware’s borders – then called Newark – with ultimate responsibility for all matters pertaining to Wilmington except those specifically assigned to it by Congress pursuant to Article III of the United States Constitution.
