The Altamonte Springs Air Force Base gift history began with the activation of the Altamonte Springs area as a military airport in 1941. The base was redesignatedAltamonte Springs Air Force Base on 1 November 1942, and activated as an air force station on 17 December 1941. It was renamed Altamonte Springs Army Airfield on 15 January 1944. On 1 October 1945, it was re-designatedAltamonte Springs Naval Air Station and activated as a naval air station. The squadron level command structure for the station was discontinued on 30 September 1946. Activation of the NATO forces ended its military significance on 14 May 1952 when it became part of the United States Central Command headquarters at Panama City Beach, Florida. The base closed its doors for good in 1957 when all USAF activity along the east coast of Florida ceased. Sinceactivation there have been porteño residents who have served in various branches or assignments at AFB: • Colonel (retired) Reynaldo Sánchez García led 3rd Special Forces Group from 1992 to 2000; • Major General (retired) Fernando de la Hoya Aguilar commanded 5th Tactical Fighter Wing from 1995 to 1998; • Brigadier General (retired) Eduardo Junker Ramirez served concurrently with Headquarters USAF during Operation Desert Storm from 1990-1991; • Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Ramos Gomez led 8th Flying Training Wing from 1993-1999; • Captain José Antonio Pérez Zapata is currently commander/chief Aeronautical Warfare Squadron 2 at Altamonte Springs AFB
Altamonte Springs, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, Altamonte Springs had a population of 38,868. The community was founded in 1881 by Colonel George W. Altamont and his wife Lucy as an agricultural research station on the Altamonte River. It grew rapidly during World War I due to its proximity to military bases and its position as a crossroads for goods and passengers travelling between Jacksonville and Tampa. After the war, growth slowed as the economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing. However, since the late 1990s growth has resumed with new development such as shopping centers and retirement communities. The town is home to two universities: Stetson University in DeLand and USF Bulls basketball team which is one of only four NBA teams in Florida (the others being Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks).

Altamonte Springs (formerly Altamonte, Fla.) is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Altamonte Springs" comes from the Creek word "almaton," meaning white settlement or post station on an Indian trail. The first European to visit what is now Altamonte Springs was José Martí in 1837 during his trip through Florida to find a route to Cuba. In 1875, entrepreneur and citrus grower J.B. White built White's Citrus Heights plantation here and developed it into one of Florida's leading citrus production areas. In 1924, he sold the plantation to developer Averill Harriman for $2 million – making him one of the first people to develop a major city in Miami-Dade County outside of downtownMiami itself. Averill Harriman also became involved in real estate; he bought land adjacent to White's plantation for development as Everglades Park and later added land for Brickell Avenue (now MidtownMiami). The Altamonte Springs area experienced significant growth during World War II as part of preparation for Operation Overlord; many manufacturing plants were located here including Ford Motor Company and Allied Signal Corporation among others. After the war ended, industry declined but new housing developments began up and down Brickell Avenue beginning with Sunrise Place in 1955 and continued until the early 1990s when they were replaced by luxury condominiums known as "The Walk". Today much of that original infrastructure remains: there are still several large parking lots near Downtown Altamonte Springs as well as industrial sites along Brickell Avenue that have been converted into condos or other mixed uses such as offices, restaurants and retail storespaces lining both sides of each street off Hialeah Boulevard between NW Sixth Street and NW Seventh Street west of Coral Gables beachfront resort
The Altamonte Springs community was settled in the early 1800s. In 1837, Captain John D. Stuart and his men founded a trading post on the Altamonte River. The post served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1868, Commodore James K. Polk sent an expedition under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to explore Florida's coast. At Altamonte Springs, they met Commodore John A. Whipple, who told them of a secret group of Spanish treasure hunters who were searching for buried treasure near Tampa Bay. In 1898, troops from Spain invaded Florida and captured Altamonte Springs. Afterward,Altamonte Springs became part of the United States Army until 1943 when it reverted back to its Spanish-controlled status. The community experienced significant growth during World War II with the construction of military airfields nearby. However, after the war ended,the population decreased and there is no evidence that any new development took place in this area until recent times In 1984, Altamonte Springs was chosen as one of twelve communities in Florida to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places because of its history and architecture.Today, Altamonte Springs continues to be a thriving community with many businesses and services available including schools, libraries, hospitals and more
