The name Altamonte Springs comes from a Seminole word meaning "place where the water runs clear." The first European to set foot in what is now Altamonte Springs was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1778. He named it New Ross after his ship, the Ross and sailed past it on his way back to England. There are several theories as to why Cook called it New Ross – one theory suggests he mistook its location for an island in Lake Ontario because of the high salt content of the soil there; another theory suggests that he thought it would be easier for him to find freshwater resources if he named a place such as that after someone important ashore on his travels. One story has it that early settlers were attracted by its natural springs which they discovered during their trips through this area. Others believe that this area became popular due to its easy access to markets and farmland south of Tampa Bay due to its low elevation and potential for irrigation systems. By 1823, when Governor David Brower made an attempt to annex what is now Polk County into Miami-Dade County, Altamonte Springs had already grown significantly and began developing into what it is today with businesses such as J C Penney (founded in 1901), Sears Roebuck & Co., Bank Of America/Merrill Lynch, Beaumont Plumbing Supply Company, Mrs Ralston's Bakery (established 1888), Floridian Gaslight Company (established 1895) and First National Telephone Company being among its earliest occupants. In 1925, Altamonte Springs incorporated as a city under the name "Orlando". In 1939 Coral Gables annexed much of north central Orlando making Altamonte Springs once again an enclave within Orlando proper although growth continued unabated until about 1960 when Interstate 4 was built linking Sanford with Kissimmee; more recently satellite shopping malls have developed near I-4 exits 575 and 704 giving residents much closer access than ever before! When World War II started following declarations by President Franklin D Roosevelt that "America needs her boys" many military families chose Altamonte Springs over other locations throughout Florida due primarily to its proximity to Ft Walton Beach naval base; during peacetime only very limited service was provided here with most operations concentrated nearer Miami or Osceola Naval Air Station nearby on Jupiter Island*. After Pearl Harbor* things changed radically with General Douglas MacArthur having arrived here from Japan just days after Pearl Harbor* - units assigned here included everything from artillery pieces used against Guam targets up through medium bombers *Allied air forces used both camps extensively between 1945-1949 while Japanese personnel were evacuated** *. The first Europeans to explore Altamonte Springs were the Spanish in 1565. The area was part of the colonial land grant to Don Carlos de Montoya y Costilla, who named it La Florida. In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris after losing war with France. In 1824, a group of American patriots led by Colonel James Wilkinson decided to establish a town in what is now Altamonte Springs. They named their town after Captain John Altamont, one of their number. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Altamonte Springs. In 1892, an electric power plant was built in Altamonte Springs and became the first commercial electricity provider in Volusia County. In 1959, Hurricane Forney struck Florida and caused extensive damage across much of the state including parts of Altamonte Springs. The city quickly rebuilt and has remained an important center for business and culture ever since.
