Altamonte Springs, Florida is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 2,859 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Mt. Vernon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Altamonte Springs ZIP Code 92634 has a population of over 54,000 people. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1778 as San Carlos de Allende and named for Don Diego Rivera y Costilla who had been appointed Governor of Cuba during the first years of American Independence. Afterward, he moved his headquarters to Tampa and then to this area on what is now Altamonte Springs Boulevard which was then known as State Road 442. In 1833, after being forced out of Havana by General James Kenedy's victorious Invasion of Cuba (see Battle of Haines' River), Spanish settlers began moving into this tract including José María Gomez and Manuel Ramos de la Torre from Stonington who were granted land east of Altamonte Springs Boulevard on Indian KEY—the present day intersection of US-1/SR-4 and SR-5 near Kissimmee Airport on Clearwater Beach

In 1905, they added a home for the indigent to provide housing for those living in poverty on their property. In 1912, the city of Orlando bought the land that includes Altamonte Springs from the Smiths. It became part of Orlando until it was annexed into Jacksonville in 1914. The city of Altamonte Springs developed primarily as a bedroom community for Orlando and its suburbs.
