Altamonte Springs is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Altamonte Springs is located on State Road 17 and its ZIP code is 32701. The town was founded in 1884 by J.C. Churchill and others as a farmstead on the intersection of two branches of the Altamonte River. In 1907, it became an incorporated village with a post office and schools. The name "Altamonte Springs" was chosen to honor James Biddle Altamont (1821-1900), one of Jacksonville's first settlers and founder of that city's Chamber of Commerce and namesake for what are now Altamont Park, downtown Jacksonville, and much of Sanford County. In 1933, after most people had left for suburban areas around Orlando or Kissimmee,[1] Altamonte Springs Mayor John Hynes proposed annexing neighboring towns Orange Park and Sanford because they were all having trouble getting water from their respective springs due to high demand from residents in those far-off communities.[2] When both Orange Park and Sanford rejected annexation,[3] Hynes then submitted legislation proposing that both towns be annexed into Altamonte Springs;[4] but again both Orange Park and Sanford refused to become part of what would become known as "Orlando East".[5][6][7][8][9] On July 1, 1935—the day before annexation finally took place[10], referendum results showed that 96 percent of voters approved incorporation into Altamonte Springs.[11][12][13]. The Altamonte Springs Mall is located in the town. The first permanent settler near present-day Altamonte Springs was Jno. Gadsden who arrived on a ship called the "Patriots" in 1786. He prospected for land and built two homes on what is today Altamonte Springs Boulevard and Indianola Drive. In 1811 Jno.'s brother George moved to this area from Georgia and founded Gadsdenville on what is now US-1 south of Altamonte Springs Boulevard. This village had a post office from 1812 until 1815 when it was renamed Altamonte Springs after General James Altamont, Commander of American Expedition against Mexico under President James Kettlesham Adams (1809-1813). General John Taylor served as Postmaster from 1816 to 1830; he also raised chickens here for food during that time period In 1836, Henry Clay became United States Senator from Tennessee and visited Florida's Seminole Nation where he met with Chief Osceola and other leaders about creating an exemption for Seminoles from military service in the Mexican War of Independence because they were considered Indians not citizens of Mexico subject to its laws In 1840, Captain Wm Hargrave began operating a ferry across Tampa Bay called the "Hargrave Ferry" which transported passengers between Tampa and Jacksonville Landing in St Petersburg or Clearwater on Lake Okeechobee Captain Hargrave continued operating his ferry until 1862 when he decided to build better transportation systems using steamboats instead departing every day at sunrise for Jacksonville Landing carrying goods upriver then sailing back down at sunset returning empty handed . After Captain Hargrave's departure, Tampa became known as Port Hudson due to alligator sightings along Hillsborough River by early white settlers . In 1865 Commodore Matthew Perry sailed into Tampa Bay via Lake Okeechobee as part of his Underwood Expedition during the American Civil War steaming past Fort Brooke which east coast residents thought was just an Island () but actually anchored off shore about 10 miles southeastof downtown Tampa ().
