The population grew rapidly after World War II which led to annexation of other towns in Citrus County including Longboat Key and Jupiter Beach. A new shopping center called Gateway Mall opened up in 1998 which caused a decline in the number of residents living near the mall but has since been reborn as an important community cultural center with a variety of theaters, restaurants, art galleries and more stores than ever before.
