By 1870, there were over 20 businesses operating inAltamonte Springs. By 1915, the population had grown to over 500 people and soon after developed into its current form with numerous small businesses clustering around downtown. In 1921, First National Bank opened up shop on South Main Street within walking distance of where it currently stands (now part of the mall). In 1840 Captain George Demarest documented Spanish settlement at San Antonio Bayou where he says "a small creek separates us from this place" and another Portuguese owned bayou nearby which extended into present day Tampa Bay before being sold to Spain in 1596 as part of Treaty Of Paris following the Alamo War between Spain and Mexico In 1842 Captain Aiken Beall landed his ship Georgia off Key Largo while exploring Tampa Bay as part of Operation Alligator Captain Beall later donated land comprising much today's downtown area including most notably Government House Square where government buildings still stand today along with numerous residences dating back to that time including Mrs .
