Altamonte Springs is a city in Osceola County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. Altamonte Springs was founded in 1892 by General John W. Futch as a small town on the Kissimmee River. The first post office opened in 1893 and was located just east of present-day Altamonte Springs on U.S. 1 (later State Road 4). In 1896, Futch donated land to build what would become Altamonte Springs Municipal Airport, which served as the primary commercial hub for much of central Florida during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1949, Altamonte Springs became an incorporated city under the name of "Altamonte". The city government adopted its current name in 1959 after it won a referendum asking for it. At that time, Altamonte Springs had a population of only 11 people and was home to two schools: one high school and one middle school; both were closed by 1970 due to low enrollment rates and were later demolished. The rapid growth of Central Florida during World War II led to development around Altamonte Springs airport including areas now known as Eustis Boulevard and Lemmon Avenue; these developments include many large shopping malls which are still active today such as Sears Tower Shopping Center (now Belk), Magic Johnson's old Mall (now Macy's), Dillard's Department Store (now JCPenney), Kmart Supercenter (), Publix Supermarket (), Foley's Sporting Goods (), Old Navy () and other high-end stores ().
